Cloud and VPS,Which one to start with

Posted by AEiX, 08-18-2010, 09:19 PM
Hi, I am new to this community. I am a university student who is experimenting with some business ideas. I have been building websites for some local start-up businesses as well as student groups in my faculty. I have found out lately that a shared web host cannot handle more than 1 domain although it claims to support unlimited. Furthermore, as I intend to explore my business, I have come to the realization that I will need at least a VPS to start building websites for my clients on. I have read several threads and came across "Cloud Servers" as an alternate solution to VPS. My question is, for someone who is starting out in this whole VPS business, what makes more sense, a VPS or cloud server? I am mainly concerned with cost since I am just starting this business which is starting with minimal working capital. I also plan to host my clients' websites on my VPS/Cloud server to generate addition revenue, at the same time, expand my service offerings. Any insights or assistance will be greatly appreciated

Shared hosting should support more domains - maybe you just have a bad provider VPS is generally cheaper than a Cloud server - have a look in the offered section to see the differences

It depends of what do you need. If you want to be able to scale up the virtual server, you'd better go for a VPS powered by Cloud computing infrastructure. "Traditional" VPSs can also be scaled but as far as they are hosted on stand-alone servers, there are physical limits on the machines. Do you know how much RAM, CPU, etc. you need?

I actually don't know how much ram and cpu i need. I do not have a lot of clients at the moment. It will probably get up to a maximum of 5 for the time being. They are nothing intense, just basic joomla sites. What direction should I look into for this kind of a start-up? Thanks for your replies

Personally, I would start with shared to keep the costs low. Since it's a start-up it's not going to use much resources, so shared will provide you a great entry point, with a managed environment, and some ability to grow. Once you outgrow shared then you can move to VPS or Cloud Server. Also with shared, you may want a reseller account. The reason is not that you are actually reselling, but two things: 1) Many shared hosts expect one standard account to be used for one person and/or business. Most hosts frown, or strictly prohibit the use of a single shared account to be used for other people or companies besides that of the account holder. 2) A reseller account will give you a segmented environment for each site to separate resources, provide control to only that one environment for each person you want to have access, and in the event one ends up being a problem it would not cause the others to be limited either as they are independent accounts.

A VPS is generally cheaper than Cloud Servers. If you have small amount of clients then a VPS would provide you with what you need to accommodate your clients' websites. But if you're looking for a Cloud Server I'd check over at ThePlanet (y)

Thanks for all of your input. It is greatly appreciated. I am currently using HostMonster. However, since it cannot support .ca domains, i cannot have them transferred to HostMonster. I think I will have a look at the offers to see if I can find a good Canadian web host. Thanks again.

If you are unsure of how much computing power you will need, you could port your Joomla sites on a cloud environment with the smallest possible instance. If your sites need more computing power, you could scale up (and down when needed) and re-verify. It may take you less than 15 minutes to arrive at a good load-computing balance. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I'd start with a simple VPS if you have any kind of budget contraints. A cloud server is going to be significantly more expensive.

The only way I can answer this cost issue is by quoting - a cloud server can cost as low as $10-11/mo. A VPS will be in the same range if not more.

The cloud prices are definitely coming down.

generally speaking, vps is cheaper than cloud. however, cloud gives you a more robust platform to scale for the future. meaning, vps might be better for the short term, but cloud for the long term. i guess it depends on what your priorities are.

In my opinion, a high end VPS would be best for you. Take a look around the WHT Marketplace. There are usually some great deals for VPSes there as well. Another plus that you may need would be cPanel WHM. This will provide you with a nice control panel to easily control and manage your websites and even your clients.

Probably VPS to start is your best bet. Just do your research as you are doing now before you put down the capital.

Why can't HostMonster support .ca domains at the current time?

Hello, My opinion, you should start with Reseller account. By using this type of account, you can create seperate account for your customer, and the price is much lower compared with VPS or even Cloud.. Thanks...

For cloud hosting, I believe the disk I/O should have a worst performance compared to VPS hosting.

There is no correlation to disk IO when comparing VPS to Cloud. That depends on the infrastructure that either is built on, and either can be superior in regards to IO.
