Speed up a VPS

Posted by ssocas, 04-20-2016, 01:25 AM
I currently have a VPS with LiteSpeed and SSD, but some of my customer's sites feel slow, specially online stores. How can I increase the server speed?

You need to optimize your vps. It doesn't mean having a litespeed or ssd will make your site faster already. You need to look at cpu, ram, etc... and optimize your software.

you might also look at what resources that you are using. It might be time to upgrade the ram on the VPS as well. What kind of server load do you have right now.

When the sites load slow, check the resource usage on the server and find out which script is eating up resources. Sometimes it could be that you are running on low memory, sometimes it could be a poorly coded script or sometimes it could be a CMS with lot of unwanted plugins and themes. If you are using CMS, check into the caching mechanisms as well.

Have you try mod_pagespeed from Google?

Also, you should check sites, they may use not optimised pictures or some plugins that are not using and it increase load time

check your VPS resource usage top/htop and check your client website load, such as using gtmetrix.com and optimization as recommended

If the sites are slow, it well and truly be an issue with the scripts not the actual vm its self

You didn't specified about the configuration of vps ? If sites are slow, it is not only in the case of less hardware resources, but it might be an issue at application level, you need to optimize your site and database for getting the maximum performance, at server level you can use various caching mechanism to increase the performance, is all the sites hosted in vps are slow ? what are curretn hardware resources of your vps including memory/cpu etc ?

The load is around 1.79 1.78 1.60 in the morning. At peak time sometimes it gets 3 or 4. The server has this specifications: Processors: 24 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v3 @ 2.40GHz Speed: 2400.205 MHz Cache: 15360 KB 220 GB SSD & Litespeed I have noticed this happen mostly with Prestashop sites. Sometimes customers complain about speed. They believe the problem is the server. I can invest more money, if necessary, but I am not sure which resources I should increase.

I would suggest you to go with Managed VPS plan, if you do not have complete technical knowledge, you can get best hosting company here in this community.

I'm curious what you've tried so far to isolate what is consuming the resources on your service? Lots of recommendations already here. Have you asked your provider for assistance?

I suggest do a pingdom test for all the sites having issues and optimize the database and identify the performance again, there are different factors concerned about it, you need to consult your webhosting support or else need to hire a admin if the above solution is not working.
