VPS IP allocation practice

Posted by abrakatabra83, 04-14-2016, 07:56 AM
Hello. I just bought a new VPS and it has 2 IPs on it. There is the primary IP with the hostname on it and one more with nothing on it. Intuitively, it seems like a good idea to place the hostname myserver.mydomain.com and cPanel for the main domain mydomain.com on the primary IP and the other cPanel accounts of clients etc on the shared IP like this: 111.111.111.111: myserver.mydomain.com mydomain.com nobody root 222.222.222.222: client1.com clientwebsite.com moreclients.com When i told the tech support i wanted to separate root from the cpanel accounts he said he could see no point in it as both IPs point to the same thing. So i wonder, is there any advantage in this kind of setup? Even from a practical point of view? Maybe in case of an IP blacklist or something similar? Also i'd like to ask if anyone knows why the root user changes IP when i change the shared IP in basic cPanel & WHM setup. If i go to IP Functions » Show or Delete Current IP Addresses, the root user shows up wherever i've set the shared IP to be. Does this mean anything? Thank you

The only real benefit of doing that would be if one of your clients sites got DDoS'd leading to a nullroute, your customers would still be able to view myserver.mydomain.com

But in that case wouldnt it be better to split the websites on all IPs equally so at least half of them will work?

Standard practice would be to use 1 IP address, you shouldn't have been given the second IPv4 address without requesting it for a specific reason in my opinion (valid justification).

Generally the shared websites would be on the main IP. The only reason you should use the other one is if you wanted it for your personal (company) website or sell it as a dedicated IP. As NgageMike said generally you should have a reason for the second IP unless it just came with the package.

For most normal use, there's not going to be an advantage from splitting sites between IP addresses.
