Reseller migration

Posted by starlitsky, 07-14-2014, 05:09 PM
I signed up for a new reseller account and I asked my new webhost if they support migration whm accounts from a VPS account to the new whm reseller account. They said yes. 1. Should they need root access? 2. Should they need me to the new account and packages before they migrate? I've been with maybe 3, 4 webhosts and I've never had to do this.

Since the accounts are being transferred from a VPS it's understandable for them to ask for root access (the easiest way for them to move your accounts). Not exactly sure what you're asking regarding the packages, transferred accounts should maintain their quotas after the migration, however, you'll need to recreate the packages within the new WHM account if you want to utilize the feature manager, etc.

If this is cPanel/WHM ... 1. Yes, root (or wheeluser) access will be needed on the VPS to make their life easier. 2. No, you do not have to create packages or anything. They will import from the VPS.

1. They don't need root access but it is easier if they do have it. There's not really much harm in giving it to them. If you don't trust them with your data / VPS you probably shouldn't be using them anyways. 2. Do not create the accounts first. These must not exist in order for the backups to be restored during the transfer process. Packages don't have to be recreated but you'll likely want to do so at some point. All of the limits will copy over but the packages won't exist. As such you'll have to create new packages and use the upgrade/downgrade account functionality to assign your domains the new packages whenever you want to adjust the limits.

If you are vacating that machine anyway, you might as well provide them with root access so they can take advantage of a more efficient migration process afforded by having administrative access to the machine. Obviously it's a good idea to take a backup beforehand either way. With a cPanel --> cPanel migration, all of the user data should be imported.

If you are moving to a new host they will have root access to your account anyway so giving them root access to your VPS to move your sites more efficiently would make since.

1. Should they need root access? Not a must but easier for the host if he get the root access. You need to trust your host, if you don't then there is no point being with that host since you don't trust your data with them 2. Should they need me to the new account and packages before they migrate? Not needed initially, you can create the packages at a later stage.

Root access would make it much easier for them to move. When they restore it to your reseller account, the account settings/quotas gets transferred as well.
