Hostgator India does not provide Shared SSL

Posted by wolf_metallo, 03-22-2015, 01:13 PM
Hi All, I recently had signed up with the hatchling plan from Hostgator India, since I knew I'll be hosting only one website and don't have any end users. Typically, most of the big name hosting providers give you access to the shared SSL certificate for securing cPanel and WP access, or even to use it for front-end - albeit with browser warning. I was trying to use the shared cert of India server for past 2 weeks (and so were few others, as I read from forums across). I spent nearly 7 days of back and forth with their support - which by the way, is pathetically slow and poor (nothing like US hostgator). Finally, they tell me that their new server configuration in India doesn't allow shared SSL certificate to be used by us! We can use it only for cPanel, but not for wordpress!!! Now they ask me to upgrade my plan, buy dedicated IP, and a private SSl certificate - thereby increasing my prices at least 3 times. If a hosting provider cannot provide basic security of your website, I strongly feel they shouldn't be your choice at all. I am claiming for my refund with them and moving to HG USA or Bluehost India. Please take this post as a warning post for anyone in similar situation - HG India never mentions that anywhere on their website and also have a support forum article that shows how to use the shared SSL cert (obviously they haven't updated the article, but still). Regards, Owner of a currently insecure website

For private ssl no dedicated IP required, you can install on shared IP and it is very easy on cPanel. But we think offering shared SSL is augmented service.

well, it's time to move on. Find a good provider here and you will be happy.

Seems HG India disagrees with that - I asked them this, they quickly declined That's what I am doing now, this post was only to give heads-up to others in a similar situation. Although very limited options to host for India specific market, I want low latency for India and as such server should be in India or nearby. Any suggestions? My next best bet is Bluehost India, but their uptime is questionable...

Bluehost and Hostgator owned by the same people ( EIG ) so be careful you don't have the same issue.

Sigh! Who said building a blog is an easy task I have reached out to bluehost with my query, this time I'll get it in writing before I purchase a plan. Thanks a ton for the headsup!

Ask them for SNI support and then get free SSL from StartSSL.

A big no to bluehost. For India, I suggest look for servers based in Singapore. Have a look at HostWithLove. They have servers in Singapore and LA(Asia optimize ip), excellent support and fast servers.

Thanks all, I will check for SNI as well as other hosting providers - didn't think of singapore or neighbouring asian countries. Although, I'll prefer to have local phone support - can't spend a fortune on international dialing I am not sure about SNI - will research a bit more and see how it can be used in my case. Although, I doubt HG is going to help me in any way... Thanks again!

The latest version of cpanel supports SNI out of the box. So most of the decent providers have it enabled on their plans. On an SNI enabled server, you dont need a dedicated IP to install a private SSL. So, in case you need one, you can get SSL from anywhere (Comodo SSL starts under $10 per year) and be done with it. HostWithLove provides free SSL with every plan, if I am not wrong. But if you really need local phone support, then they might not suit you. Though I havent yet needed phone support. Their ticket resolution time has been pretty good for me. Still, there are a few India based providers here on WHT (Leapswitch, Milesweb, Xinix, Cloudcandy Host etc), so you can try contacting them, search for their reviews in general. This might help.

When I signed up for HG Hatchling plan, the welcome email had specifically mentioned "SSL: Disabled". They said that they cannot enable SSL on that plan, and SSL cannot be implemented on it with any method. Yet, i will try the SNI option and see if that helps. I checked out HostWithlove - I liked the plan they provided and their inclusion of free SSL. Will research few options, I still have 2-3 weeks before I can get my refund from HG.

Hello @ryus, Thank you for recommending us. @wolf_metallo , We do provide India based shared hosting with SNI alongwith 24x7 India based phone support. We are also a Globalsign Gold Partner for SSLs in India, so we can provide the SSL certificate if you do not have one. Ishan

Ryus, Thank you very much for your recommendations. I finally moved my website to HostWithLove - as read on other threads, I really liked their customer support team. Detailed responses with honesty... also, their service does fit my requirement. Now only thing left is to get my money back from hostgator! In other news - they asked me to upgrade to the top end business plan to get the SSL cert and IP address - all that just to secure my wordpress! Thanks everyone for your help!
