Starting a Reseller Business on Shared Hosting

Posted by HundredProof, 07-28-2011, 02:56 AM
Some of you may know by now that I plan on starting up my hosting and domains reseller business. The question I have now is whether I will be able to run WHMCS along with WHM from a Reseller Panel from my website on a shared server. Will there be any issues when the software runs their crons. Or, will I have to opt for a VPS? If i can run it on a shared server, what would be the minimum requirements I should look into?

You can configure Cron Jobs in WHM/Cpanel very easily.

There shouldn't be a problem with running WHMCS on your Reseller Account. There's no problem at all which I could see. There's a special licensing for WHMCS on reseller accounts if your uphost took it from them.

My question is whether the crons would eat up my shared platform. I was testing with a WHMCS trial and within a week my host said I violated my AUP. So....?

As long as you don't set the cron jobs to run at ridiculous intervals I can't see why this is a problem, the cron job simply runs a PHP script called 'cron.php' and its fairly light as far as I'm aware. Did your host specifically inform you that it was your WHMCS installation that was causing you to violate your AUP?

No. They didnt mention that specifically. I would only assume so coz the other sites on my shared were running well for over a year, until the day I created a demo subdomain and installed WHMCS.

Thats weird, very weird indeed. You should of asked more but I've never heard of any issues regarding this other than what I've mentioned above. It does make suggested cron times on the setup page within WHMCS and I usually use these.

So, regardless of the number of registrations I get, I can still get it done on a shared server right? I intend to give out domains and hosting at no cost. If I get a spike in registrations, it wouldn't affect the service right?

With a reseller account and whmcs you can issue any number of sub-domains and provide free hosting, they will be no problem in spike in registrations, that will not affect the server as long as you setup your whmcs and whm correctly, submit a ticket to whmcs have them look at your cron job that will fix that issue.

To start a new Reseller service we suggest you go with a Manage VPS this gives you more durable and freedom in managing your service . not to forget get a Manage VPS if you dont know much about the business and get your hosting tech to go thru your obstacle .
