Securing a site for Internal use only and only accessible through username password

I'm trying to learn how to build a website that would be for internal use only for myself and few of my coworkers. It will be more of a place where i post up tutorials +videos for my coworkers. I want to create different level of access to content. I'm just tired of walking each person through the same thing with our archaic system. I currently am paying a shared hosting at stablehost.com. I'm trying to secure it so no one can access it. I know just putting a password on the directory in control panel offers some security by blocking people from viewing the site.. But afraid people may try to crack it. Also wondering what other security things i can do to beef it up? What cms would be secure enough for this? Drupal? wordpress?

Shared hosting is accessible to the world so I would recommend that you run the website on a server in that building.

Ah =/. I also own a vps but to me thats not secure lol because its not properly managed by me. I figured shared hosting was a long shot because it will be on a box with other sites.
