Raid 1 vs Single Disk

Posted by SAHostKing, 12-17-2014, 10:05 AM
Hi all, We have a server for one of our customers that has high io wait at times and high queue length on some of his VMS. We are trying to resolve this for him. He has 2 x 2TB SATA Enterprise disks. Will making this a Windows Server 2012 Software RAID 1 (Mirroring) increase performance or worsen it? Thanks

RAID1 is for redundancy not performance, so it won't help performance-wise but it will help you by not losing data if one HDD fails.

Yes, with software raid1, the read speed will increase compared to using 1 drive only. Write speed will remain the same.

To increase both read and write speed it is recommended to use raid 10.

Yes we just recommended to him to use RAID 10 but he sais he cannot afford it at present so want raid 1 or raid 0. I told him raid 0 is very bad. But will raid 1 improve his iowait as what I can see he is using cpanel on a VM with HyperV and wants me to raid the 2 disks in raid 1 setup. Will this improve his disk ip and iowait for his server. What I understand from raid 1 read will improve but write will be slightly slower. Is this an issue for cpanel hosting servers? IF it is a good setup we may have to offer this on all managed dedicated cpanel servers. Please advise

Hello, Can't you opt for a H/W raid?Using it along with RAID 1 will provide you with better I/O and sufficient protection against drive failure. I hope this helps. Regards

Client is on a budget and does not want to pay extra so no

Going to setup him with RAID 1 and move the VMs from the other disks to this disk and see how it performs. Thanks

If the client refuses to pay any extra then tell him he needs to look at his coding and try and optimize that.

As [HB]Andrei said, RAID 10 is for redundancy. To increase performance, try RAID 10. If you don't need much disk space, you can go with SSD's as well.

Hi, Since you are left with no other option, I think it would be worth going with RAID-1 and use Cache Modules on the server. Raid-1 copies the data on 2 disk in the backend, so write speed is a bit slow, but read speed is very good.

no raid, just make sure to do backup when the disk is not at peak time.
