I was wondering, what happens if the domain names are similar? For example; www.rapidhostuk.co.uk www.rapidhostus.com -- wouldn't that cause an error as the accountnames would both be rapidhos? How do you get around this?

Seems like that was resolved in the latest version.

It could be quite a common thing also,
Because the same thing would happen with toomanyletters.com as well as toomanyletters.net

How do I enable the random usernames feature?

Setup -> General Settings -> Ordering
(As long as you have the newest WHMCS)

And you don't need to be using the random usernames feature either.
WHMCS will automatically detect if a username is already assigned to another domain within the database and then append a number to the username to ensure it's unique. So that should ensure the account creation doesn't ever fail simply due to the username being taken, even for domains where the first 8 letters are the same.

The first account will have the username: randomdo
The second account will have the username: randomd1
