SSL - Warranty

Posted by dennisl, 10-26-2014, 02:55 AM
Hi there, I have 2 questions about SSL: 1) I understand that SSL companies do provide warranty eg $10,000. My question is in what circumstances you can claim it? How do I know if there is a security breaches? 2) After installing SSL, is it possible to scan or check the security of the website? If yes, how to do it? Thanks.

I was wondering the exact same thing with all these ongoing security issues like heartbleed, poodle, etc.

Checking SSL support (protocols, certificate, etc) is quite different from scanning the server for vulnerabilities in general. You can check your SSL support here: https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/ For vulnerability testing, you need scanning tools (Nessus is a good start) or pay for a 3rd party scanning service (like SecurityMetrics) to run a vulnerability assessment.

This warranty is NOT for website/server owners it is for end users who visit your site. Say a person runs an eCommerce business, I purchase something from their SSL enabled site but it turns out to be a scam site and they take my money without giving the product. Now I can avail upto $10K from the SSL certificate provider since they issued a cert to a scammer.
