Question about Mandrill and Gmail

Posted by waya, 10-26-2014, 07:45 PM
Before I had a forum sending mail out with @Gmail address as the sender. This didn't work out too well, because it was treated as spam. Later instead I set up an email forwarder via my domain register using their dns to just forward emails such as user@domain.com to user@gmail.com which seemed to help a bit, but there were a few emails that still went to spam even if not as much. If I use mandrill, can I send out emails via my forum with @Gmail and it would reach users inboxes? Or even with mandrill I would still need to use an email address with my domain? Anyone doing this? Thanks.

hello, you can't send from @Gmail.com e-mail with mandrill. You can setup your own domaine to use mandrill as email service and send e-mail of your forum with user@domain.com. Note that your will need to configure your domain to use mandrill, if your domain is not well configured, your e-mail will still go to the spam box. You will also need to use the mandrill SMTP server in your forum in order to send e-mail via mandrill proprely. Regards,

Ah, that is a let down. I prefer to just send out mail with my @Gmail address. Has anyone actually tried it though, do you get an error message of some sort? Also what do you mean I need to configure my domain to use mandrill? Are you referring to a SPF and DKIM record? Thanks.

Yes, you need to setup your domain SPF and DKIM records for the one's of mandrill. You can also use your gmail account but you need to configure your forum to send the mail by the gmail smtp server. Actually your forum probably use the php mail() command to send e-mail and that's why many of them go in the spam folder. Regards,

I see, so basically if I want to use gmail address to send outgoing mail my only option is to use the gmail smtp server (which isn't free?). I guess I have no use for mandrill then, I actually kind of wanted to try it out.
