FSCK on LVM Snapshot

Posted by spykee, 10-25-2014, 06:59 AM
Hello, I have a server with 2TB volume, it's on LVM. This is owned by a big customer and it's on a managed service - part of it is for the server to have a regular filesystem check every 3 months. However, doing FSCK on a 2TB FS will surely take long and the customer would not want that (but they have some regulations to follow, fsck every 3 months should still be done). I have read something about doing a snapshot on the LVM itself and just scan the snapshot instead? Which can be done even when the system is running. So this requires no downtime. So I have some questions: 1. Does this mean that this approach will only tell you about FS problems? And it cannot fix the problem which is on the LVM that's running? 2. In case of FS error detection, I still have to fix it with the usual way? That's by booting to single user mode and fsck the LVM volume. Anyone who has done this? Thanks.

Running a FSCK on a live LV or snapshot isn't a good idea as both are continuously being written to. Each time a change is made on the source LV, the original data is copied to the snapshot. What filesystem are you using? Having a 3 monthly FSCK as part of a maintenance program seems a bit ridiculous to be honest. Journaling filesystems aren't that unstable, and you should have a decent battery backed storage array under the LV. Have that do regular scrubs of the array and you should be fine.
