UnlimiHost To Stop Offering Reseller Plans

Posted by ImponenteHost, 09-07-2010, 08:02 PM
UnlimiHost, a subsidary of The Prime Host, will no longer be offering Reseller Hosting. This comes after suffering a hard drive crash which resulted in them losing all of their client data. This comes from an email I received from Darrell over at The Prime Host, along with my due invoice. I was given two options for my UnlimiHost reseller account: transfer over to TPH, or terminate my account. I was told my plan would also be reduced from my Unlimited plan to what is being offered over at TPH for the same price I'm currently paying. I'm deciding to go somewhere else. Possibly MyVIPHosting - I've worked for web hosting companies that have used them, and after their recent server security upgrade, their hosting is actually pretty good. I understand that users are responsible for their files, even we handle this term in our policy, however does not justify such damages on a server and not having backups to a remote server via FTP at least, there are very cheap and reliable offers. So there is no excuse. I believe that in these times the industry requires at least this feature being a plus for your business, we make daily backups, but we do not ensure that files are going to be always safe because anything can happen (you know, the wrath of God, 2012, apocalypse), but at least users can rest assured in case of a disk failure, there are several copies of the previous days that can be restored. Good luck with them, remember to keep your backups and god bless you.

Did they not have backups of your account stored on a secondary drive or offsite location?

wow - anything and everything can happen in this industry - but, to have absolutely zero backups is a pretty scary thing (and honestly, annoys the heck out of me because it makes the rest of our jobs so much more difficult).. I can understand mistakes - ie old backups because a process broke which monitored failed backups for example - not ideal, but, I could understand it.. having absolutely zero backups and losing all client data pretty much means they never had backups to begin with. Really curious if backups were advertised on their site as part of their offering.

They had to re-create my account on WHMCS, which they did on TPH. UnlimiHost's WHMCS isn't back up yet. I was told UnlimiHost's new focus is going to be on VPS Hosting. Last edited by ImponenteHost; 09-07-2010 at 09:51 PM.

Unlucky. They should have kept offsite backups.

Let's clarify things a bit shall we? Unlimihost is a subsidiary of ThePrimeHost. We picked this domain up back in 2003. We've been sitting on it ever since and just started to market it a bit. The server that crashed was our billing server (while it was running daily backups which wiped out client billing data - along with the backups.) We did have an offsite backup but not for Unlimihost (only a handful of clients exist on Unlimihost) so I've decided to let it sit for the time being while we shift our focus to Fully Managed VPS offerings at The Prime Host. This in no way effected our client's hosted data what so ever. Our billing server did not have RAID and all of our clients' servers do to prevent this type of issue. That is incorrect on your part. We were going to allow you to keep your existing plan only switching the billing over to ThePrimeHost billing center. I got the impression that this client was happy. His final words to me from an email yesterday were: "Okay, well hope you guys are successful with VPS. I am considering getting a VPS or a Dedi next so maybe I'll purchase one from UnlimiHost. Thank you for the great customer service and the awesome uptime." It's amazing how everyone jumps all over you and assumes the worst. Such is the industry we work in I suppose

First of all, just to clarify, their billing system crashed, and none of the files I hosted were lost - just my WHMCS billing information on file. My site continued to stay up during this process. Second, they were actually going to let me keep my plan. There was just some confusion with the emails that were sent to me, I thought I was going to be transferred over to TPH's plans. Finally, the email shared by ThePrimeHost in this thread is mine and true. UnlimiHost/TPH was good to me while I was a customer with them, and now that they are offering to give me my old plan, I am definitely considering staying with them.

Good for both of you. I hope even reading about the possibility of losing data on a hardware crash will also help other members on this forum.
