Marked as Spam in Gmail and Hotmail

Posted by ePlanetDesign, 02-20-2010, 05:09 PM
Hi WHT'rs Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I recently ordered a reseller account with another hosting provider and now every email I send on every account I have is marked as spam by Gmail and Hotmail and who knows what else. I've gone as far as: 1. Created a new account on the server with a freshly registered domain. 2. Created a new/unique email on that new domain. 3. Created a fresh gmail account, sent an email to it and it went straight in the spam folder. Also, when the hosting company replies to my support tickets, they go directly into my gmail spam box. Sounds like a problem with the server to me Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks James

First of all, check that the server isn't blacklisted anywhere. Next, see if your provider's server is configured with SPF and domainkeys. Gmail doesn't usually care about SPF and domain keys, though, which makes me think that your server is blacklisted somewhere. Yahoo, on the other hand, definitely does care about SPF and domainkeys.

Thanks, I just tried Yahoo and it's fine, not marked as junk. I've check MXtoolbox for blacklisting and everything looks OK. I forgot to mention, they recently just changed the server's hostname. Not sure but it might have started then. Thanks

check your spam assassin settings as well if it is your mail server marking the messages as spam. Try disabling it and see if it still happens can be done through cpanel.

I would look at the headers in Gmail to see if it has any clues.

I think they forgot reverse dns when they changed the hostname, problem should be resolved in a day or two.

Mismatched rDNS can cause some issues like that Update us in a few days.

When the gmail and hot mail teat your mails are spam, Your mail servers IP may be got listed in any of the spam databases. Your hosting support should submit a delist request to them after removing the spam activity completely from the server. As an temporary fix you hosting support can change your mail server IP to a new one(it should have RDNS record)

I've went to several sites that check your ip for blacklisting and none of the ip's come up blacklisted. Spammers are spoofing my emails and sending spam as though it was from me. I get spam everyday, from me, to me on all my email accounts. Somehow that's got to just ruin your whole company name and domain name. I did some testing today and if my company name is in the From or in the Subject... straight to the spam box. I'll do more testing this week. Spammers are really lowlife, scumbags, it's one thing to send millions of spam everyday, but when they wreck your company name/domain name, that's really hitting below the belt. I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks James

same is the problem with me

I just wish we could come up with some kind of workaround. I may just open a new domain name, make the email addresses really weird like support.techs at blahblah.com. I've had a few gmail accounts for close to a year, in that format, with a dot in the name, and not a single spam. But then again I rarely use those.

i'd check the mail headers then and see what they return. Try sending from webmail and your normal mail client and see if there is any difference. We just had a similar issue and it was outlook express putting dodgy stuff in the headers.

I have tested it with our contact form, both it and Outlook on my desktop do the same thing. If I put my company name in the subject, it goes straight to Gmail spam. I created new accounts, with new domain, all is well until I put my company name in the subject. If I use all lowercase and no spaces then it seems work better.

You made sure you've set up the reverse dns's?

Posted by hostchunk, 02-22-2010, 10:19 PM
http://www.haltabuse.org/help/headers/ go there and then post the headers here from an email marked as spam.

That didn't give away any clues everything seems to have passed. Not really sure which direction to point you in now. Try sending an email to tim@hostchunk.com and ill see what spam assassin has to say about it. Good luck

I've looked through the headers before and never could spot anything, but then again, I'm no expert. Email sent. I may just get a new company name I'd like to put that smiley in my sig.

I have Postini and it doesn't block them, just Gmail and Hotmail. Yahoo passes it.

Posted by ePlanetDesign, 02-22-2010, 11:39 PM
I think it has to be the server I'm on. I just put in a support ticket to my host to see if it would go into my gmail spam and sure enough, straight to the spam box.

If you receiving a bounce any back messages then have a look on them.

Posted by techstar, 02-23-2010, 10:34 AM
In case it is spoofing you can think about adding spf record in your DNS entries. Domain keys also will help you upto particular extend.

Posted by ePlanetDesign, 02-23-2010, 10:36 AM
Thanks to everyone, No bounce messages. I have Domain Keys and SPF setup for my domain. (Everything was fine on my previous hosting provider) It has to be my host, his ticket replies are going to spam too. If it's not fixed pretty soon I'll have to move.

May be your IP has got blacklisted by any of the RBLs. You can check it here http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx . If it has, you have to ask your host to find out the reason and have them de-list it. Still planning to look for a new host??

I've checked every blacklist I can find, everything looks good. If it's not fixed pretty soon I'll have to move. I hate to move because this host has the features I need (free whmcs, ssh, Texas server), server is not under high loads and very reasonably priced.
