What sort of error does FileZilla give you?
Have you tried with another FTP client?

2. Easiest thing is to have your old host tar up that folder then just download the tarball, then you don't need to worry about opening the folder as it'll just be 1 big file to download, then upload to your new host and have then untar it (or untar it on your home comp and upload the folder yourself).

Another option is, if both servers are linux server and you have root access, you can use rsync to transfer the data.

Expect long delays trying to enumerate files in that directory -- which is why your FTP session fails. Your best bets are probably sftp and rsync. The latter would be more efficient if it's available to you.
