Name servers question.

Posted by Cory94bailly, 12-31-2009, 07:12 PM
Hi, Currently I am setting up my master reseller to sell resellers/cpanels.. We are using 1and1 for our domain. We only have 1 dedicated ip on our account so I have some questions. I read in tons of places that name servers should be "ns1.mydomain.com" and "ns2.mydomain.com".. Why does there have to be two? Also, I want to know if setting both "ns1" and "ns2" to go to the same IP (our dedicated ip) would work.. Thanks to anybody who answers

There could be one, but nameservers are redundant for best performance, unless you want whole thing to go down when server fails

Well if the server fails, what would be the difference between 1 or 2 ips if they're both on the same server?

DNS for domains that are not hosted on it will still work... I have 4 nameservers

So would there be a point in making ns1 AND ns2 go to the same ip? Should I only do ns1? The only problem I see from this is that godaddy requires 2 (I think).

Then create both host nameserver to same IP, and add those nameservers, there's no problem

You need two nameservers on two IPs. Otherwise there wouldn't be a point in hosts having 2 nameservers, it's just a waste of an IP. They both function to make your sites work. I'm not sure how master reseller softwares work but to set up NS for your resellers, you'd generally need root access and access to editing DNS zone to set up a-records. You should ask your host for help with this or if you want full control of it, get a VPS with at least 2 IPs that you can use for two nameservers.

I'm on a master reseller running whm and cpanel.. WHM does allow me to edit dns zones and stuff like that.. But we currently can only pay for 1 dedicated IP until we get some clients, until then, we are on 1.. As long as it works, I should be good until then

Can you edit the nameservers the reseller accounts use? I know Root of WHM allows you to do that for individual servers, makes it easy for nameserver set ups. And since you're a reseller yourself, you could just add on the nameservers to the two IPs your host set up on their server, but as I said, you would probably need root access. Ask your host to set that up for you. Personally I'm not a fan of master resellers, most providers providing these are either alpha master resellers and a majority have gone out of business a few months after launch. It's sad because they tend to pack the server with as many clients as possible to get as much profit as possible. Server can become unstable. But there are a few out there that are efficient, ones that know what they are doing. But in either case, I'll always recommend you either get a VPS or Dedicated if you want to offer reseller services. Much more stable imo.

I think so, I haven't setup a reseller yet.. My host has 5 years of experience (Legit, I've been looking at it on and off for a while). And they sell dedicated servers and VPS.. Like I said before, we are on a VERY tight budget.. We were going to buy a dedicated server when we get enough customers then expand from there (game hosting, etc..)

You should set up a test reseller and see if you can. Even if the host has been up for 5 years, my feelings about master reseller providers won't really change. Have seen too many negatives about it over the past few years. How much are you paying right now and what's your budget if you don't mind me asking? And after reseller, you can get a good VPS, learn how to manage it, then move onto a dedicated, you'll save more money by taking smaller steps when you need them.

I'm waiting for the sub-reseller to be setup Well, I'm currently paying $17 for an unmetered master reseller.. We are trying to keep our budget at a bare minimum until we get customers.. That budget would be $28 ($17 for master reseller & $2 for dedicated IP & $9 for domain) We were debating on a VPS or a dedi as our second step.. Thanks Also.. I just thought.. If I make a sub-reseller, don't I have to make them their clients? Has anyone ever used WHM?

You're waiting for a sub-reseller to be set up? Why do you have to wait? I thought they were instant. Unmetered master reseller, you shouldn't look to getting great quality. I won't comment too much on it because many people here already know that what you have isn't a great combination. We use WHM but we have our own servers, I don't understand the system you have there though. Every reseller should be able to make a sub-account instantly without having to wait for the parent host to make it.

I don't think they have to.. When I made a 'standard cpanel', it was instant.. I'm not sure why it's taking so long.. I have to currently create new accounts via "WHMreseller Master Resellers" but we're going to probably install phpcoin to automate it.. Do you have any suggestions on (free) scripts to automatically setup client accounts when they pay?

The best free one is probably phpcoin, but I'd recommend whmcs, it's about another $15/mo but it's worth it.

Oh by the way.. It turns out that my browser gave me a popup with an error but I didn't read it, that's why the account wasn't created.. I fixed the errors and it was instantly setup.. Also yes, I have access to their (and their client's) dns zones since I can login to their whm/cpanel accounts..

Good to hear you can instantly set up, that's what I thought in the beginning but I've just never used that kind of service so wouldn't have been able to tell you of any errors. You also need access to change your client's account's nameservers. In WHM (with root), you can edit it under reseller center.
