Good Windows Reseller Needed

Posted by andrewlondon, 08-10-2009, 02:53 PM
Hi, i'm looking for either a very reliable Windows VPS or reseller account. I've been asked by a client to take over more of their websites, at the moment i currently look after hosting and on-going development work for their php based websites, they're so happy they've asked me to start hosting and looking after their asp sites as well. Thing is, a friend of mine has a few of his own servers which i use to host their php stuff so downtime is nearly non existant, he doesn't have any windows servers (and doesn't want any) so i'm looking for a reliable place with good support to host their sites. I'm a bit wary because if anything goes wrong then it could ruin our relationship so i'd like something very reliable, tons of bandwidth and storage isn't important, i'd rather just have a reliable service. My budget for this is around $100-120, can anybody make some recomendations? I'd rather go with an established company because i don't want the sites dissapearing when the host goes broke leaving me to pick up the pieces. Thanks in advance. Andrew

You have a very decent budget for Windows VPS. I'd recommend you to go for Hyper-V or Xen based VPS solution since it provides high level of OS isolation and dedicated amount resources (RAM) which will ensure better performance over some of the other VPS solutions. Also, be sure to check reviews of your prospective hosts over here as well as over some of the reliable review sites on internet to ensure that you don't pick up a wrong host with bad reputation amongst customers. Good luck!

Are you looking for a specific country to host in - USA / UK / Europe? I'd suggest to perhaps look at getting a dedicated server - on your budget, you should be able to find a decent offering, in addition, you haven't mentioned your disk space requirement or monthly transfer?

Hi, i'd prefer them to be based in the US, i've looked at dedicated servers but once you factor in a control panel, monthly windows license and 2gb ram you're looking at about $180. I know you can get them cheaper but i was looking at rackspace and the planet hosting as that's where the servers i host our other sites on is located. Seeing as this is going to be for one client only (i don't intend on offering windows hosting to anybody else) then i'd like to pay no more than the budget i mentioned earlier.

Is it one client with many sites? Are you sure you need dedicates or VPS? Maybe a multidomain or reseller shared hosting plan will work. Don't forget, if you get a dedicated or virtual server you have to deal with more than just web service. There is DNS, email, database, backups, etc that you will have to manage or pay someone to manage.

It's one client with 4 sites, they all run on a custom cms. Traffic isn't anything major but the sites are fairly important to their business. I'm not totally against reseller packages i just want a reliable host with good customer service. I've used Vps's before and to be honest the were ok but I probably had issues on a monthly basis. I've never used windows vps's before so who knows.

May be you can speak to some of your prospective VPS hosts, get some amount of discount initially so that you can check their services, network connectivity, etc. before you make a final decision?

how many sites are you looking at? that would explain if it makes sense to invest in a VPS or go for shared. I know this one host who has his own servers for Linux Hosting and uses ResellerClub for Windows. Not many popular Windows Hosting Companies out there

And who is "this one host"?

After discussing it with my client we've decided that he will cover the cost of a dedicated server, we look after it free of charge and we can sell the spare space on the server to other clients. Win win. Thanks for all your replies!

If you get a dedicated server then virtualize it and rent out the extra VPS for profit
