Reseller? NOT!

Posted by Gabriella, 08-12-2009, 04:46 AM
Aloha from Hawaii. Please help me if you can... A- I need a reseller account because I have 8 domains. I don't sell anything. My domains simply teach, & counsel. For free. B- My present host has been good, but got bought out & seems to have run into problems over the past 3 - 4 months. Reluctantly, I must move. C- I want a host with following specs... 1- No adult sites allowed. No overselling allowed. No unlimited space or unlimited bw offers. 2- In business at least 2 full years, and participates here in WHT from time to time. 3- Will give me what I have now for $10/month: 2GB space, 30GB traffic, WHM & C-panels. 4- Will let me pay-in-advance month-to-month via something like 2Checkout.com. (I no longer give my credit card info to web hosts -- no offense, but I have had some bad experiences.) 5- Will move my files from old host to new host for me. P.S. Please keep replies non-technical. I've had websites online with paid hosts since 1998, but I am a rank amateur at webmastering stuff. Peace and grace to you all, Gabby

Aloha Sorry, just curious, I understand the no oversell and no unlimited but why not adult sites?

Isn't that obvious, some simply do not want adult content to be in any way connected to their websites. A very understandable situation. Not to forget that adult sites mostly put a rather high load on servers compared to other type of sites

I do have a question to the OP though; are you really needing a Reseller account ? (not that this is not a good way to do it; but in general more expensive).

Oh ok, it's because of the shared IPs, understood In my opinion adult sites are not heavier than others, but maybe that's because most of ours are ffmpeg sites... Thanks again

Reseller Hosting will cost you more and upfront payment too. You just have 8 domains, so why don't you go for a company which offers multiple Domain Hosting with their Hosting plan. It makes sense to go for a Reseller Plan if you plans to host more domains (a lot more) @pornsites: I think its difficult to figure out if a company is hosting porn sites. Many put in their Terms that Porn sites are not allowed, but i don't think there is a mechanism to figure out if one is hosted. They come to know about it and unsuspend it only when they get complaints.

Gabriella - you can easily host those on a reseller account which would be restricted to your web-space and bandwidth request. Additionally, if you have a reseller account, it would mean you could easily how 8, 10, or even 20 sites AS LONG AS you do not exceed your allowance.

that's a very good budget, you shouldn't have a problem finding a host with your requirements, but you'll have to dig deeper and ask the hosts if they allow adult hosting - as keith said above, hosts will allow legal adult hosting because it doesn't violate any laws but there are a few who restricts them from the server in total.

A reseller account isn't needed unless you need to have a separate account/control panel for each individual domain/website. Most web hosting providers accept payments through gateways such as 2Checkout or PayPal nowadays so you're unlikely to be stuck in a situation where you're forced to hand over any cc details. Anyhow, your budget and requirements are very reasonable and I wish you the best of luck in finding your perfect host. Should also give the shared or reseller offers section a look if you haven't already. It may help Good luck!

The problem with Paypal, if he doesn't pay with a card, is that services are not eligible for customer protection. In other words, you are very unlikely to dispute a charge and win, even if service is not rendered/the contract is breached etc.

I am too inept to answer your question. All I can say is: (a) "Reseller account" is the way I have always done it (& $10/month is well within my budget), & (b) I don't like "add-on" accounts, & (c) I want a C-panel for each of my domains for mail-handling purposes & because I use differing SpamAssassin filters for each of my domains. If there is a better/easier way, I am eager to learn! @all who replied -- THANK you for your helpful comments. I am very grateful to you all. I'm sure there are better and easier ways but it's also based on personal experience, what's easy or me may be terribly hard for you and vice versa. But if you feel comfortable in a reseller environment then by all means go for that, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise - take things at your own pace. and to find a host, you could just go around the offers section and ask questions and since you were specific about the adult hosting, bring that up as you go along. That's probably the only thing that's sticking out for me right now. Good luck

He can find about whether adult hosting allowed or not from the TOS. Actually he dose need a host that never allows adult sites. But as ashishy stated before, it is difficult to figure out if there is an adult site but once they get a complaint they will suspend/terminate that account.
