R1 backup - Idera backup software

Posted by avantRS, 07-29-2013, 04:14 PM
To my utter dismay I have discovered that the Free "Single Server Free Licence" does NOT mean a virtual server. It means an actual physical server. Which is a real pain as I spent a good couple of hours installing the bloody thing and creating a backup! Nowhere in all of the advertising spiel does it mention that you cannot use it on a VPS. So when I emailed support for a bit of help I was directed toward "sales@" because they do not support their Free software. Not even a guide as to how to uninstall it. But if I "upgrade" to the FREE 14 day trial of the Enterprise version they can help me uninstall it? Anyone have any recommendations for any simple server side backup software for CentOS that I can extract the odd file from if I need to restore a backup? Thank you all as always for your invaluable help.

That's odd, since the screenshot here shows a license for a virtual server http://www.idera.com/productssolutio...rverbackupfree I'm not as familiar with the free version as I am the Enterprise. If you installed it via RPM you should be able to follow these directions to remove it (from their docs) http://wiki.r1soft.com/display/Serve...+Free+on+Linux

Thank you for the uninstall link. It has left a considerable number of directories that are proving rather obstinate. Yes, it does indeed show a free server licence for a virtual machine but this was the response from an enquiry: Still looking for something so any suggestions gratefully received.

http://www.idera.com/productssolutio...ompareproducts -> http://www.screen-shot.net/2013-07-29_1700.png Looks to me like they do clearly state the free edition won't work in a virtualized environment unless I'm misunderstanding? If I'm not misunderstanding it appears you're putting them down for your own misunderstanding?

Appearances can be deceptive Mike, as you know. I am not blamestorming here - I think itis really good software but I, like the poster above, saw the page with the (what appeared to be) a free licence for one server up and running on a virtual server. But what apeared to be sadly wasn't. It wasn't time wasted either I learned quite a bit. But I am cross that this is not as clear as it could be and there is no real excuse for that. So, do you have any suggestions for an alternative?

If it's just a basic centos VPS with no control panel then use rsync, it's free and easy enough to use for backing up and restoring files when required.

I loaded the same page as you and the other poster - and can see nowhere that it indicates that it would work on a virtualized server - can you point that out for me? I did see that there were two versions [one free, one paid] and out of doing the due diligence I looked at the 'comparison' page to see which one does what. It was clear to me, at that point, that only the paid version will work in a virtualized environment - I fail to see how this is misleading. It looks to me, and I could be wrong, that you assumed it would work on a virtualized server and you were disappointed when you found out that was not the case and not that they misrepresented the product. Do please correct me if I'm wrong. p.s. I'm not a fan of Idera/R1Soft or their support/sales practices so I'm not sticking up for them here - but simply trying to understand how you came to the conclusion that you were mislead - I can't see it.

This screenshot, on the page I linked above shows the free version working for a virtual server. Under "Licenses" Physical servers 0, Virtual Servers 1. http://www.idera.com/~/media/corpora...e/sb_free.ashx Seems like they just need to update the screenshot so it's consistent with their offering.

Ah, I see what you're saying now. Even after you explained it - I had to look at the image for 30 seconds before I saw what you were saying.

Well, the plot thickens. Somebody over at Idera (and my money is on the "sales manager") is totally without clue: "Hello, I can confirm that the "-1 Remaining" message is cosmetic only, and should not affect the backup. Also, installing Free Edition on a Virtual server IS supported. In almost all cases (with the exception of some Virtuozzo/OpenVZ), SBU Free should be installed into the guest OS/VM as opposed to the hardware node. So please feel free to continue your evaluation on a VM, and please disregard the erroneous "-1" license count. It will be addressed in a future release. I hope this helps. Best Regards," So - now that I spent a day installing it and another hour or so taking it back out of the server .............

Perhaps would be better due diligence before installing anything? Even on Windows installing some software could get you into trouble when you unsatisfied with s/w and want uninstall it. Believe me some s/w just have not uninstall option... Back to r1soft s/w. Why you want uninstall it? Even with free license it does work and you could use it (with limited functionality of course) for daily or hourly backups. If you have second hard disk that will be better but this is not required and in common situation you could use main hard disk to store r1soft snapshots (just exclude that folder from policy). That is absolutely enough solution for daily usage to restore accidentally deleted, modified, infected files within seconds or minutes but of course this would not save you from hard disk crashing.
