Googlebot requesting nonexistent strange filenames

Posted by Oplactric, 08-01-2013, 10:27 AM
Genuine googlebot is requesting files with stange names on my web server for my personal use. The latest one was yesterday and resulted in 404 response like the others with strange filenames. This is the kinds of files googlebots from two ip's have been requesting on my server: Do you know what this is about or can you share your thoughts about it?

Is this traffic coming from IP addresses in the 66.249.x.x range? If yes, it is genuine Googlebot. Did these files exist some time in the past? If not, then somebody else, owner of another site, for some reason is linking to these non existent files on your site. Using Google Webmaster Tools you can find which sites have links to these files.

Yes the IP addresses are from the 66.249.x.x range. I highly doubt that these files have existed on the account or other accounts on the server. Google Webmaster tools: Search Traffic > Links To Your Site : no such links or other kinds of such links are present.

Hello, I would recommend to scan the files and database to make sure that there is nothing malicious out there creating random files.

I've scanned with CXS exploit scanner but it didn't find any suspicious files. It has been scanning on a regular basis for a year now and I'm updated every time. It has Watch Daemon enabled. Searched also for files.

Most probably you are using WordPress or other third party script. Make sure that you are using their latest version. Also scan your contents using ClamAv or Maldet.

Firstly, don't panic. Secondly, this could be related to Google Webmaster Tools. Google Webmaster Tools asks you to verify your website through several means, such as creating a TXT DNS record, or adding a file to your server. If you choose to put the temporary file on your server then Google will look for the file every now and then to reverify you. As such, if you delete it, it will hit a 404 error and typically the file has a random name such as the ones you said your getting hit with.

Already taken care of, except for Maldet, I've been using CXS. These verification files are there on the cPanel hosting accounts on my server. But these stange filenames googlebot is requesting have not the same type of names.
