Posted by EasycPanelXL, 04-04-2009, 10:47 AM
Dose your host provide daily/weekly/monthly back ups.? How important is it really to have back ups? Are Backups being provided free of charge? If so How much Storage. What are the chances that a hard drive will fail? has it ever happen to you?

So there is a charge for restoring your data . . . Do any companies you know of offer Up To The Minute Backups? Restoring data is done very easy I don't understand why they would charge for this, The biggest cost is the additional hardware and better cpus to handle the spikes of cpu loads. I have 3 computers, I make back ups of all my clients every night at the same time and only charge 10$ a month. I do this for many reasons, Just incase hard drive dose fail or if something else happens.

My host (Cartika) has user accessible backups using R1Soft to all resellers and their clients with multiple restore points (30 days). Very easy for the reseller or end client to access through their control panel and restore a single file, folder, domain, or database. Yes, backups are important and having them user accessible is even more important in my opinion. Why go through all the trouble contacting the host if you/end users can access them?

That is a great advantage but 30 days is a long time, it would be great if they were Up to the minute data recovery.

That is the beauty of R1Soft/Cartika, they take several snapshots a day (this is set/controlled by the host) to see what files have changed and you have 30 days worth of these at your disposal. So you have multiple restore points. Just Monday I had a client restore several SSI files they had messed up on their site at 6:10 PM EST. They were able to restore from 2:30 PM CST earlier that day which was 3:30 PM EST. Of course I lectured them again for not keeping a backup of their own before working on files Last edited by tcstatic; 04-04-2009 at 11:50 AM. Reason: clarification

What is the pricing on having this feature enabled? Is there a cost? is there a setup fee? Are there any hidden fees?

Posted by tcstatic, 04-04-2009, 11:55 AM
Nope, it is included with all shared and reseller accounts they offer and is also included in most of their dedicated server offerings. You can take a look at their site if you like (cartikahosting.com). The reseller simply includes this (no cost to reseller) on the plans they create for Windows, ColdFusion, Linux etc. Of course there is nothing stopping a reseller from charging for this even though it is provided to them for free. EasyCPanelHost says right on Backups are very important to have. out of 10,000 hard drives 1 might fail, I am not the type of person willing to take a risk like that.

Backups are really important, Even if you own a forum site its important you can lose members and more.

I am sure that the 30 days could be negotiate, but remember that it will probably end up costing you a bit more.

Sure extra cost for daily back ups, most main stream hosts back up there servers once a month. When you start dealing with reseller accounts they are from 15-100 GB large and some companies offer By The Hour Back ups, Some Daily, some Weekly all depending if you want to spend the extra cash to make your network reliable.

Posted by StartYourServer, 04-04-2009, 12:45 PM
Which companies have you found that offer them by the hour?

Posted by EasycPanelXL, 04-04-2009, 12:48 PM
Well we offer By the minute backups on our reseller packages. With point-in-time snap shots, to provide up to the minute data protection.

Posted by StartYourServer, 04-04-2009, 01:12 PM
Did you find a datacenter that housed backups for extremely cheap or will you just have the old backups destroyed whenever new ones come in?

Posted by EasycPanelXL, 04-04-2009, 02:08 PM
We have it setup to keep 2 weeks of data, up to the minute screen shoots of our hard drives. If people wanted backups to remain on servers longer its always possible but thats basic configuration`.

Are you planning on continuing that practice regardless of how large your company gets? It seems that a lot of companies will do stuff similar to that at the beginning but stop after they reach a particular amount of clients (or money).

Posted by EasycPanelXL, 04-04-2009, 04:22 PM
Well if a company offers a service at a rate when you sign up it would be nice if that product had a price lock guarantee meaning your price would stay the same even if the pricing for the company had changed. Always ask if the host you are signing up with has a price lock guarantee .

Posted by StartYourServer, 04-04-2009, 05:17 PM
I guess I should do that more often. I always just assume there is that guarantee since I would consider it to be unethical to change someones price.

Just to clarify, we only ask for that fee if you have us do the work. You could always restore it yourself 24/7 right off our backup systems if you are subscribed to our cdp service. I don't think that fee is too unreasonable though considering the tech time involved.

Would you care to explain in detail how you're doing this? It's not quite the same as what you're saying here.
