'Unlimited' mailman hosting?

Posted by SeahamPaul, 06-02-2008, 11:43 AM
After 2yrs with Site5, they've suddenly applied their 500ph email limit. I have a client who runs 6 mailman discussion lists with up to 750 members on each. Traffic can be a maximum of 4000 in an hour, but then 10000 for the full day. We've had to use Googlegroups before and again now as an emergency but we'd prefer branded lists. Am I likely to find a host who will allow this or would a dedicated server be the only likely solution? Any help would be appreciated, Paul

Hello for 4000 emails per hour you should look for a VPS solution to have your own server.

A VPS could be a cheaper option to a dedicated I guess. There are email only/newsletter hosting providers out there, though I don't know if what they offer would fit your purpose.

This whole thing of 'unlimited' has some limits. I am not speaking about overselling, but actual limits of a server (so that you do not 'disturb your neighbours'). A VPS should be a better solution. Shared hosting should not be an option. You can also check some services specialising in Mailing Lists / Newsletters.

I agree with tonyFF, there's never really unlimited. Always a limit to what you can offer.

I did put the unlimited in inverted commas - I know the score by now when it comes to resources. However, thanks for pointing me to the VPS route which is much cheaper than feared. I've asked a couple of hosts quickly, and they both came back and said Yes. Just have to select the best one now, Cheers.
