Is it possible NS1/NS2 have the same IP?

Hello, I know this question going to be really basic for most of you, but for newbies like me it's not So far most of the custom name servers that I have seen are all assigned by two different dedicated IPs (usually sequenced), but recently I read that both NS1 and NS2 can be assigned to the same IP, is this possible? if yes then why people usually use two IPs? what are the pros and cons? Thank you in advance.

Yes you can use 1 IP for both. When using 2 they should be in different locations. for example: NS1 is an IP in the UK NS2 is an IP in the US If the DNS server in one location fails your sites are not affected. However if you use 2 IP's that are located in the same place then if there is a DNS failure both go down and it makes no difference having 2 in the first place. Therefore using the same IP for both is the same as using 2 if they are in the same location. Make sense? Sorry typing on phone and cant see what I jut said

Hi, If you're a hosting company, it is a good idea to setup 2 instances of cPanel DNS Only on two different servers and in different location. You can them set them up on each shared hosting server and always have the same name servers no matter how many main servers you have as the DNS Only directs the traffic to the right path. This helps if you need to quickly transfer a website off to a different server of yours. That's a simple way to look at it and is only 1 benefit. If you're hosting DNS on the same server as hosting then I see no need for multiple IP's

So is that mean it's not a good idea to purchase the second IP from the same hosting provider? Currently I have a dedicated server at liquidweb that comes with only 1 IP which is assigned to NS1 and I was thinking to purchase the second IP for NS2, where should I purchase this second IP?

I would recommend you buy two low end vps and setup cPanel DNS Only on them. 256MB of RAM should be enough and remember to go with different providers and locations.

I agree to the suggestion of SurrealScripts, this is the most reliable way to ensure that your DNS (!) stays online. Also, cPanel DNS Only is free to use, and you can easily link servers to this control panel.

Any suggestions where to purchase another IP (other than liquidweb's IPs)?

As already suggested you would be better to purchase a cheap yearly vps which comes with an IP and setup your own DNS or use the many DNS providers out there.

If you're using a forum that isn't the easiest thing to do. Instead have a single hosting location for the forum, and 2 locations for ns1+ns2. Static content is much easier. Our website uses geodns like I presume you were thinking of; so US visitors go to our US server, EU go to DE etc.

Get to VPSes. One in EU regions maybe and one is US (this will depend on your visitors/clients). Setup cPanel DNSonly in both of them (It's free). And then configure the Clustered DNS service from your servers running cPanel WHM.

The VPSes that will run the DNS Server will need to have cPanel DNSOnly installed.
