WHM on VPS - what php setup?

Posted by dolphinaura, 08-29-2012, 12:52 PM
I currently have a small 1GB RAM vps for hosting my server's status pages, analytics, .etc .etc. The thing is, ive been struggling to find a good php setup. SuPHP eats memory like crazy. mod_php (dso) is non-threadsafe, so it can only run with prefork. fcgid takes an extremely long time to spin back up after all its processes shut off. Any reccomendations?

PHP with FastCGI is an alternative solution and also utilize suexec to support different users with their own instances of PHP.

Hi, While suPHP is a great thing, some situations and configurations require something else. If you intend on using eA or any other caching, then fcgi or DSO would be the way to go. If you have no plan on using caching, and don't have load issues, then there's no reason not to run suPHP.

I would like to add that suPHP is a great thing if you do not have large number of accounts on your server otherwise it may create performance issues.

so I tried out fastcgi again, and this time, added some settings to increase the timeout, and make sure it did not take so long to startup. It still lags a bit at the start, but was much better than the 3s wait before I made the changes.

Hello, Use FCGI with Eaccelarator , it works well together . Kind Regards

Hello, Use PHP with FastCGI which is the prefered way of running PHP. Thanks.

I would agree with this. One of my technicians prefers ruid2, as apparently they've resolved some problems with it and it has a couple fewer bugs than fastcgi, so that's also an option.

Are you using mod_ruid2 with a custom compiled threaded php (custom compiled since there is not a version in the repos) and the apache event module btw? I have tested that setup for a while, and though some say that threaded php is unstable, I haven't had any crashing. It is much faster than suexec though

Dophinaura, what settings did you add to increase FCGID startup time?
