Just wondering if anyone uses Puppet for multiple server administration and how is it working for you?

Not necessarily Puppet, but I've been using shoestrap lately with much success.

I have used Puppet since its inception and its great. It took a while to setup initially by writing our custom recipes to configure servers, but once that was done it makes deploying new servers a breeze and most importantly you can ensure a consistent configuration particularly when migrating between new and old servers. In the beginning I found the templating language a bit restrictive in some cases, but once I got use to Puppet's way of thinking it hasn't been a problem. This has been improved a lot over the years though.

I looked into Puppet and Chef a while back. The DSL difference between the two is Puppet is more sysadmin friendly and Chef is more coder friendly.... Wondering if anyone that have used both can comment if that's true. I'm more sysadmin than a programmer and wondering which would have lessen learning curve? Thanks.

You can use Ruby in the Puppet DSL to, to be more coder friendly as you suggest. http://projects.puppetlabs.com/projects/1/wiki/Ruby_Dsl

I would definitely recommend Ansible It was created by the Cobbler developer, it works over SSH and you can get started in minutes... Last edited by vpsshell_co_uk; 10-12-2012 at 06:21 AM.

I'm looking into this right now and it is seriously one of the most interesting technologies I have seen in a while. Definitely could save a lot of setup pains once getting over the learning curve is over. Lots of modules available on GitHub and Puppet Forge. Basically plug and play.
