Hostgator? [split from old thread]

Posted by shedrock, 01-07-2008, 07:46 PM
Hopefully you guys can give me some advise here. I am currently with Westhost but the service has been nothing short of terrible. I am thinking of signing up with Host Gator. The problem is that my website is sometimes a target of DDOS attacks and I am just worried that they shut my account down when this happens. Is Host Gator even a good host for me? I have over 15,000+ members on my site and just wanted to know if they can handle it. I don't want a VPS because I can't afford it. Thanks for any advise here. Shedrock

What type of site? How many page views does it receive? How many users does it have online simultaneously? What script does it use? There are hosts that specialise in hosting sites with this "feature" but they're not the cheapest around.

i agree with ldcdc completely. most host that do help you prevent DDOS attacks are hosts who charge a bit more than usual because they have to divert the traffic and sort through the mess. i personally don't know what host gator would do, but i do know most host end up nulling your IP until the attack is over hope this helps

Hello. I think that reseller web hosting accounts is used for personal needs not for reselling in cases of big number of web sites not for the one site. A lot of companies offer managed solution for that.

Well, the CMS I run on the site is PHP Fusion. At any given time there are a maximum of 3-4 members online. As far as page views. I can't say for sure at t this moment how many I get a day. (current host is down) but I would guess around 20,000 a day, could be a bit more. I asked Host Gator a few questions regarding DDOS attacks and if my Apache connections went above the max allowed. They told me that they would suspend my account, so that's one host off the list. I honestly thought that westhost VPS account would have solved all my issues. It is not a true VPS account and you can't do much as far as administering it but the bottom line is that the service is unreliable, although the support is quite good. Anyway, if someone can point me in the right direction as to a good reliable web host I would greatly appreciate it. I did not want to spend more than $25.00US a month. Thanks in advance. Shedrock

At their price point, it would have been really surprising if it was. A good reliable host is easy to find with your budget. A good reliable host that is willing to put up with repeated DDOS attacks and other traffic floods, might not be so easy within that budget, depending on the scale of them. blacklotus.net and gigenet.com come to mind as companies that specialise in DDoS protection. You might want to contact them regarding available solutions and quotes, to get an idea of what this might cost.

Thanks for the info Idcdc. I will definitely look into both of them. The costs are very high for me but I really need to think about it because the DDOS attacks just never seem to ease up. Thanks again Shedrock

I think it's quite reasonable that any host would set limit for shared hosting account. Reseller hosting is also a shared hosting except with extended features. I honestly think you might have to increase your budget for your situation.

Well, I would but gigenet.com for instance is far too much for me at the moment. Are there any others that offer VPS cheaper than this and with DDOS protection. Maybe not, but I figured I would ask. Shedrock

I was looking at this: websitesource.com/hosting/vps-basic.shtml I did have a shared hosting account with these guys about 2 months ago and it sucked. However, a friend of mine told me that I should have signed up for the VPS hosting and not the shared. Any feedback on this hosting company? Thanks Shedrock
