network speed issue

Posted by prashant1979, 10-16-2012, 09:48 AM
We have setup a Dlink DGS 3100 24-port L2 switch and have a 3-4 servers connected to the switch, all servers connected at 100 Mbps. We are facing speed issue within the network. File copy between the servers on the same switch is very slow. We are getting less than 300 KB/S speed where we should have got speed of a few MB/s. Is there anything wrong with the configuration? How can I troubleshoot the speed issue?

Has it always been this slow? Have you tried rebooting the switch?

Is anyone available to diagnose it for you at the datacenter physically? I'd try running some diagnostics to see what's going on. is the traffic/speed also slow when connecting/transferring to external servers?

It has been running slow once we started adding servers in the rack. We have also reboot the switch a few times, but there is no improvement. The traffic is slow even while connecting from servers on another switch or even outside the datacentre.

Have you asked one of the techs at the DC to check this for you?

The use of your own switch board can give you control and monitor you network. Try doing that.

It is our own L2 switch and the DC guys said there is no problem with their network. How can I troubleshoot the switch?

Check for collisions and/or errors in your switch interface statistics. The most likely culprit is duplex mismatch errors. It may be worthwhile forcing full-duplex both on the switch as well on the servers. It's very important that you do it on both sides though; if you do it on one side and not the other, the forced side will be at full-duplex whereas the auto side will negotiate to half-duplex resulting in a mismatch. In future when you need a L2 managed gigabit switch, do yourself a favour and get a Juniper ex2200-24t-4g instead. It will only cost you a bit more from the right vendor, but is a much more capable and reliable switch. DLink network equipment is made for office networks, not data centre networks.

Have you tried to contact the provider support? I would suggest you to also raise this issue in DLink forum at forums.dlink.com/
