choosing a resller account

Posted by rezzy, 12-19-2007, 02:52 PM
hello all, as many of you can tell, I am new. Let me first explain my needs and hope a solution will be presented. I am a webdesigner, and I make sites, I use PHP, mysql. I am looking for a reliable host. I have been considering HostGator because they appear to be the best known with fair costs. Does anyone know of any other hosts that are fairly priced and are reliable?

There are lots of fair priced hosts that are reliable. But before we can point you in the right direction, we are going to know some more information. What is your budget? Are you looking for *nix, Windows, both? How much space do you want/need? How much bandwidth do you want/need? Do you need unlimited domains? Do you want a client management and billing system to come with the plan? Do you want the ability to oversell?

Posted by rezzy, 12-19-2007, 03:16 PM
I would say my budget is pretty small. I think I could do at most $30 a month. Ideally, it would be $20. I don't have a preference as to hosting OS. I would like the ablitiy to code in ASP but that is not required. I do require PHP. Ideally I would like "a lot" of bandwidth and space. I really do not have requirements, although I would like the ablitiy to increase. At this point I believe I will be hosting a few websites, so I shouldn't be requiring a lot space and bandwidth. As time goes on, I would like the ablitiy to upgrade to more fitting plans. "Unlimited" domains would be a plus. I would actually say, thats one of the features I place highly. About the client management system. I first have a question and maybe that could help me figure out how I feel. My first thought is, I would like that because it makes everything easier. Without a system like that how would/should I charge and mange clients? Would they be required to use my website? Without the management system, is it easy for new clients to sign up. My understanding of overselling, is claiming I have better stats then I truely can offer. Ideally, I would like this feature because hosting websites are all doing it. Although this not an issue with me because I plan to sell to people I make websites for but, to answer your question, yes I would like to be able to oversell.

For that budget, you are going to get anywhere between 5-25GB space and 10 times that in bandwidth. (This is just a general Guesstimate) Most reseller hosts offer unlimited domains, so that shouldn't limit your search. Without a billing / management system, clients would have to contact you to get accounts setup as cPanel/WHM (assuming that is what kind of control panel you are looking for) doesn't include a billing system. With a billing system, clients can go to an order form, pay you and the account can be setup automagically, which can save a lot of time. I would highly recommend a host offering either free or discounted billing systems such as Client Exec, or WHMCS. Overselling isn't just about stats, it is the ability to sell more than you have, so you can sell 60 GB accounts and only have 20 GB space, your quota is based on what clients use, not what you sell them.

I recommend Hostdime or Surpasshosting(Surpasshosting is member of Hostdime family). Their services are very similar. The difference is Surpasshosting has not phone support.

Check out the offers section, then look for reviews of the companies. I would try to avoid companies overselling, remember you can't get unlimited space.

my biggest question is reliability and price, right now.

Posted by Nnyan, 12-19-2007, 06:23 PM
rezzy, quality hosting and support prices money to provide. At $20-30/month you're not going to get "alot" of resources, not if you're looking for quality. Also don't get too caught up with "unlimited" anything let alone unlimited domains. Is it a nice "feature" to advertise? Sure but it's really meaningless (IMHO). With shared hosting you're going to hit limits even if a host tells you you can host unlimited domains. Spend some time and do some searches on these forums, think about it, people come here and ask this question a million times. With a few searches here and some time spent in the offers section you'll come up with a list of hosts. Search on those names and start contacting them. Good luck!

As always, I recommend HostGator.

Posted by rezzy, 12-19-2007, 06:34 PM
yea, i have done alot of researching. and i understand the problems with people claiming "unlimited" stuff. when i first started looking i wanted unlimited but soon realized nothing is unlimited. i came here for opinion and thoughts about using a reseller accounts. ------- on a side note, is there any issue with companies that are really reselling a service. hostgator doesnt own the datacenter, another company handles that. ------- my other problem is i want a host that has been around and will be around. instead of getting a cheap host that cant meet its prices. I believe HostGator utilizes ThePlanet, which seems to be a respected company. I doubt you will have to worry about HostGator closing anytime in the near future.

Posted by rezzy, 12-19-2007, 08:43 PM
oh, im not. I know they have been around for quite some time. Since 2002! So I am not worried. Hostgator as I hear is the best. I am just keeping my options open.

HostGator or any other host has limits, has ups and downs. So a selection will be made after you browsed all forums where real clients speak about their hosting providers. Good luck!

ScarabWeb is good, too. I had a reseller account with them for a month or two and they are very reliable.

i am really surprised no one has tried to sell me on their product. i suppose its against the TOS, in any case. I will check them out.

Within your budget, HG might be the best with your "a lot" space and bandwidth requirements. We do know other good hosts, but they dont offer lot of space, bandwidth However, if I were you, I will ask myself if I really need that amount of space/bandwidth? Or going with better support, facility? HG has mixed reviews, also I am not very impressed with TP performance

That feature is disabled at Hostgator; but for a developer like you, not selling GBs of space and data transfer but a more or less bundled service, this is not likely to be much of an issue. A majority of hosts out there don't own a datacenter, and it's definitely not just the ones that own datacenters that provide good service. Can it be an issue? Scenarios where it could be one can indeed be imagined. After all, to a particular point, their service quality depends on the datacenter's service.

since, my plan is to offer my customers an added service of website hosting. i was considering a change to my plan. i know there are many more downs to choosing this method, but while i am in trial mode, i like the safety of doing it this way. i am considering being a single use account and then having my client(s) in that account. i know i dont have the protection i would have had. but my current clients are not interested in editing their files. then if i am able to get enough customers, so that i stop losing money, i will upgrade to an account that can properly maintain all the client's information.

In other words you're thinking of using a shared hosting account? While not entirely a bad idea given your certain situation, you should be aware that not all hosts allow reselling off shared hosting accounts. HG is among those hosts.

Posted by rezzy, 12-20-2007, 02:55 PM
yes, i am referring to a shared hosting account. i know they dont allow me to use their customer system (WHT) i spoke to customer service... technically how would they know? Last edited by rezzy; 12-20-2007 at 03:02 PM.

Well, I doubt they will expose how they find out as it will allow people to work around it. But ask yourself this, would you risk having your account disabled or even terminated because you are knowingly and purposely breaking the TOS?

Posted by rezzy, 12-20-2007, 04:07 PM
no.. heh i wouldnt want to risk. i was just wondering. i wouldnt want to deal with the clients website being down because i was playing a game of cat and mouse. so..... does anyone know any accounts that match my long list of requests? this seems to be my best bet now... so i would like to have a single account with the ability to sell on the side.

Try godaddy. I tried them before and I was happy with them.

Posted by Softsys Hosting, 12-21-2007, 10:15 AM
I would like you to do a quick search on godaddy shared hosting using the search feature on the top. No offense, but haven't heard anything good for them. Good luck!

i was looking around the host in the "offering" and i found a host that more offers most of what i am looking for. Although I have not been able to find recent reviews or feelings on it. I am looking at Hawk Host, but I am cautious because the price is so low. I know they are being hosted by: Softlayer Inc. http://www.softlayer.com/ I just wanted to know if anyone had any opinion of them. And how reliable are the server uptime stats? i finally found hosting!

Posted by redkid, 01-06-2008, 02:35 AM
have you checked into 'Offer' section? I would say getting from a host that would allow month-to-month lease to be safe. Other wise, I doubt it anyone can guarantee your happy experience. You have to try yourself, isn't it?

Posted by BrettB, 01-06-2008, 02:43 AM
Looks like he already found a host: Who did you end up choosing?

Posted by redkid, 01-06-2008, 09:28 AM
I used hostgator reseller a couple years ago. their uptime is like 100% when i was with them. the support was faster like answering tickets in couple hours; then it takes longer after 3rd months with them. but overall support is quite professional. the downside is do not use their enom reseller coz they use their name and contact as registrar that might not be good for your reseller business. other than that, i would give them a 9 out of 100. almost perfect.

Yea, I will post an offical statement later on, if I am still with Hawkhost although, they seem to be very nice. Staff and support seem to be on top of everything.
