A DNS server

Not sure if this is even possible but here goes. I've setup a domain, i.e. mydns.com which I want to use as the name servers for all my clients domains. I have 3 seperate hosting accounts at the moment; 1) UK Reseller 2) Failover Reseller 3) VPS I'd like to setup nameservers i.e. ns1-UK.mydns.com ns2-UK.mydns.com ns1-FO.mydns.com ns2-FO.mydns.com ns1-vp.mydns.com ns2-vp.mydns.com I'm looking for a VPS server which I can use to manage all of these. i.e. point mydns.com to a 3rd party DNS provider which has a control panel which then allows me to specify the IP addresses of each name server. If possible I'd also like an optional facility where I can have the 3rd party DNS provider redirect traffic to another nameserver when one of them is not available. i.e. lets say that myclient.com points to ns1 & ns2-UK.mydns.com, and lets say the server goes down, I'd like the 3rd party DNS provider to automatically redirect the request to maybe ns1 & ns2-FO.mydns.com, where the client will have an account setup but with maybe only basic features. i.e. the website might display a notice saying that the website is undergoing maintenance or something. Does anyone know of such a service?

I believe the best way to go about this would be to write a script that periodically checks for DNS updates on the main server and automatically synchronizes the other servers. This really isn't too hard to do, and with Windows servers this is done automatically.

Sorry John, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Maybe the title of the thread confused you, it should say "a dns service". I'm looking for a 3rd party DNS service which I can use to manage my domain and nameservers.

I'm looking for a VPS server which I can use to >> manage all of these. Not completely sure if I understand you right. So, please ignore if this advise does not meet your needs. But I suggest you get a VPS with "cPanel DNS ONLY" -- see here: http://www.cpanel.net/products/dnsonly/index.htm It is free software. John

John, sorry my mistake, it should have said I'm looking for a DNS service.

Hello littlened, I believe you're looking for something like EasyDNS: http://www.easydns.com/ Where your DNS is hosted completely with an independent company, hope this helps.

Thanks ben, that helps. Do you know if they have any sort of failover DNS service? where it'll dynamically change the DNS of a domain if a server goes down?

Hello littlened, Easydns does not offer failover, however another solution depending on the amount of domains you have that is commonly used is DNSMadeEasy: http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/ They offer failover DNS and are a reliable service i'd recommend, they aren't by any means cheap however the service they provide is well worth the cost.

I'd also suggest dnsmadeeasy or zoneedit.com - another 3rd party provider that will handle DNS failover for you. However these services don't redirect to your nameservers as you're suggesting. Once you set up the 3rd party nameservers (say ns1, ns2 and ns3.3rdparty.com) they don't change - only the A records change during a failover sending traffic to the backup server. Having a backup website on another server is certainly possible this way, and as you suggest it will require that the same domain be hosted on separate accounts on the two servers. Be careful with email on the backup account - you'll need to setup external MX otherwise mail can get stuck in a local mailbox or refused delivery. HTH

I've never heard our (DNS Made Easy) services thought of as expensive before. I guess there is always a first time.
