Recommendation needed

Posted by The Broadband Man, 04-30-2007, 09:47 AM
I have a colocated server with cpanel right now. The cPanel license on my server just expired and I don't feel like paying for another month as there's 3-4 sites on that box that are still active. I pay $80 a month for the colo with cpanel So my questions are 1) What do you recommend (reseller vs vps) and who do I go with 2) How do I get my 4 sites off to the new cpanel with an expired license? If anyone can help that'd be great. Looking to move within 48 hours

1.) I would recommend that you go with a reseller account if the sites aren't big (don't bring in a lot of traffic or use up a lot of resources) or a VPS (if they do).

They're not a lot of traffic but I want root // shell access basically - I have a few scripts that I need to run)

Then I would definitely recommend a reseller account. As for shell access if the company doesn't provide it then simply ask for it. I'm sure most will give it to you.

Since you need root access the only viable option for you is VPS. Reseller accounts generally won't allow you run scripts of your own.

why did you need root access?

Well, every provider will ask you 2 questions: - why do you need root access and - what kind of scripts are you planning to run? I doubt if any reseller provider will be willing to provide root access.

You'll get root access only with a VPS or a dedicated server, if you get a reseller account and the company gives you root access, run.. run.. as fast as you can.

I dont think any1 will give you shell access with a reseller acc. Go for a VPS in that case!

I would have a look at a low end VPS server so you can get full root to the server. I would have a look at KnownHost.com for your VPS needs. I been with them for about amonth and its been great no downtime support is fast! And they can help with you moving your old accounts to the new server. Good Luck with your search!
