Looking for an expensive reseller account

Posted by recoil, 04-24-2007, 02:19 AM
Time for another reseller account and I figured I'd get some suggestions. My criteria is as follows: Active forumSupport via helpdesk AND email (sometimes I need to open a case from my phone)Must have a server status pageMust allow SSH - preferably upon requestBonus if they provide Roundcube And finally, service reliability and competent administrators (they go hand in hand, don't they?). Budget: to $75/mo for Cpanel Space: Min 10GB Bandwidth Min: 100GB I'm already currently evaluating or researching: resellerzoom, hostnine, and hostgator. Id say go with SmokyHosts.com, They have good support (24/7) although no phone support but there is a good forum. They have a server status page although Im not sure about SSH on a reseller. You can get a VPS for $20 with your specs which means you get SSH automatically along with the root access to it. It comes with cPanel and WHM so it almost meets your criteria.

Try cirtex hosting, they seem to have all the stuff you want, im currently with them and there support is great (reply within about 5-10 minutes sometimes instant) they have an active forum and usually reply fast on there too, there online support is ok (needs a bit of improvement and they have a phone line for support http://www.cirtexhosting.com/resellers.shtml good luck with finding the 1 you want ! dan

Try rochenhost.com . I don't host with them but have heard good things about them.

Thanks for the suggestion, Dan. My initial concern with Cirtex is the 99.5% SLA.

I've eliminated hostnine from my consideration. I recognize they are still a relatively new company, so I won't go into explicit details here. I do feel, however, that hostnine is closing in on my business with efforts to improve their client infrastructure (#1 and #4 above). They have good support people and the servers seemed responsive in my 48hr testing. If you're not a stickler for all of the items I list above I think they're worth a try.

I would suggest going for a semi-dedicated. A semi-dedicated box will have fewer customers, and your price range is very good enough for a semi-dedicated. It is more like a reseller account but with fewer number of resellers on each box.

I had the same thought. Either that or another fully managed VPS, but I've been hard pressed to find one that is actually "fully" managed. So I'm open to semi-dedicated suggestions, as well.

I would look into a VPS server for that kind of budget you can get a semi managed server with KnownHost.com they have great support via email, helpdesk. Not sure about phone but never had to call them about anything that cant wait 20 minutes.

Take a look at this thread: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=598686 I would also suggest http://www.Kualo.com I have been with them for 4 years and their service has been TOPS They are note the cheapest but their service is worth the cost.

Recoil with your budget you will easily get a Fully Managed VPS .. so why reseller .. some vps companies which provide managed solutions .. wiredtree.com , modvps.com , futurehosting.biz , knownhost.com and many more. You can go with grid type hosting such as mediatemple.net

Have a look at Liquidweb. You'll get a fully managed VPS with 20G storage and 400G transfer for $60. They actually own their 2 datacenters, offer great support and you can easily upgrade to a higher VPS or dedicated server later. Am with them for more than 2 years now.

One more thing with the reseller you have to face limits on each domain .. i.e certain number of emails per domain per hour ,, limited number of database connections ,, In VPS you won't have any such limits ,, your dedicated resource with managed services just like reseller

Ireland, thanks for the Kualo suggestion. I'm actually just finishing up fully managed VPS service with them now. It was a pleasant experience however, not quite right for my needs given that I had purchased it for a specific client. I'll be writing a review of the Kualo fully managed VPS service in the next few weeks.

Given that H9 is rolling out their new client hotline, I've decided to extend my testing.

Thanks for the suggestion. Liquidweb's offerings are very competitive, IMO. I had actually signed up with Liquidweb about a year ago but I at that time their definition of "fully managed" wasn't in sync with mine. To me, a fully managed VPS should be functionally similar to a reseller account - I shouldn't have to tweak it and secure it. I'm a unix admin all day, I try not to be one all night. I'm looking for something similar. How is the search going? I was tempted by the liquidweb fully managed VPS but am dismayed to hear that the support is not what is promised here. Based on the comments above, I tested a bunch of hostnine client sites. I found that sites hosted with them were notably slower to pop than any of the other hosts mentioned here. Something like what I am experiencing with my current host. Signs of a busy/heavily loaded server. Koala client sites do load quickly (especially the UK hosted ones, as I am in Europe). What issues did you have with their VPS? Ideally I am looking for Canadian (or Canadian IP) Other Candidates Have been looking seriously at Carthika (Texas data centers but Canadian IPs apparently) but no cPanel at Carthika and I am moving over existing sites. Don't feel like starting from scratch. A pity as Carthika seem to be one of the few Canadian outfits providing serious support. iWeb/iWeb8 doesn't offer any SSH access at all and don't provide the services promised by the sales guys. No cPanel either. I've also been looking at IThost.ca. They do have cPanel and can offer SSH. Anybody with experience with support at IThost.ca?

I think H-Sphere can transfer Cpanel accounts, so Cartika would be a very good choice.

Yes it can move cpanel accounts, I taken a look at the h-sphere demo when I seen this feature. Last edited by CyberHostPro; 04-29-2007 at 09:44 AM.

This information is new to me .. and very much intresting

The important thing to remember with the cPanel to H-Sphere move is 1) not every provider is running the latest branch so not every provider will have that option. I know of many providers who are still on the 2.4 branch so they would not be able to provide you the migration option. 2) Your cPanel package/account settings must not have anything enabled that isn't enabled in your H-Sphere package, or it will fail. Example: If the H-Sphere provider disabled frontpage for Linux (advisable) but you have it turned on for cpanel, the move will error out. H-Sphere currently supports migrations from Ensim (2.5.1+), cPanel (2.5+) and Cobalt RAQ4 (2.5+). Simon

I just want to give you props - it is so refreshing to see someone who has done due-dillegence and has good expectation for service. I hope you find what you're looking for. Regards,

Update: My ongoing evaluation with Resellerzoom has been mostly positive thus far. After a few back and forth tickets on getting some accounts transferred and some communication issues everything appears to have stabilized. I've come across my first big issue in that it appears that both Comcast and Verizon have the server's IP in their rbl so mail is bouncing to the two largest ISPs in the US. This has happened at one time or another at every reseller provider I've used so it should be a good barometer for how support is handled at RZ. Oddly enough, this server must be somewhat new as it doesn't have a network status page or server information thread in the Resellerzoom forum. After submitting a ticket, which appears to have been escalated past RZ's first level of outsourced support, I received a polite response that these pages would be added "shortly". It's almost been a week since I opened the ticket. Last edited by recoil; 04-30-2007 at 10:19 AM.
