Why use a standalone DNS service like Dyn.com?

My mailserver has been going down because of attacks (or so I am told). So I just moved my mail (mx records) to Google Business (Gmail for business). The spam filter rocks!
Anyway, someone said that I should consider using Dyn.com or something like that. I have no idea what it does or why I would need it.
Can anyone provide me with some clarity?
