Is there any maintenance free blogging software?

Posted by zobe, 05-24-2012, 08:02 PM
I don't have the time to upgrade every single Wordpress theme, plugin and Wordpress software. I am looking for a MAINTENANCE FREE hosting software, set and run and forget about new vulnerabilities, etc. I am now looking into converting all of my sites into pure HTML, with no PHP and no ASP no complicated stuff, just HTML, is this the only way to have something that is secure and maintenance free of is there something else? Thank you

Way back when, back before Wordpress and what have you, people used to use news software. Fusion News comes to mind and is one that I have used in the past. It is simple to use and integrates easily into any template (just one include line of code to place into your website). It doesn't have plug-ins or a need to be upgraded often. Your other alternative is going back to the old fashioned way of maintaining a blog, which was updating the HTML each time you wanted to make a new entry. This gets tedious though when you want to start having more than one page of blog posts.

Thank you Jeff for the tip I just found Fusion News website and it needs PHP to run. I was wondering too if blogging software with no database would be more secure and have less vulnerability points, Flatpress for example is Wordpress without a database, written in PHP but I don't know how if that makes any difference when it comes to exploits.

Unfortunately I just realized that the Fusion News project has been ended by the developer this month. CuteNews is another option. You don't need MySQL as it stores everything in files, but it does require PHP to run. Probably similar to Flatpress, as you mentioned. The problem with Wordpress is all of the plugins that you use add extra points of attack. Wordpress is only as secure as it's weakest plugin, unfortunately. These no-database solutions that I have been mentioning don't have plugins; they are quite simply used for posting entries with a title and date. I would recommend finding a project with an active community. The more active the community, the more likely exploits will be detected quickly and patches implemented.

Even going back to pure HTML is not good enough if the server you are on is not fully secured.

There are some CMS's which generate static html pages for the frontend. Depending on what you have in mind, that might be an option. It has the added bonus of being very fast for visitors.

I now think that I might go for CMSSimple, no database needed, I am only not sure if a no database website is really more secure than a website with a database, it still uses PHP. CuteNews looks good but their forum has not been updated since 2008 and the last software release does not have a date, it seems a dead project. I have found over a dozen of no database blogging software and it is confusing knowing which one is more secure. Last edited by zobe; 05-24-2012 at 11:10 PM.

interesting thread. I took a look at flatpress. some of the themes on the site looked ok. does it sound right, that a full backup of a flatpress website would only involve downloading the website files by ftp? and that moving to another webhost would be a simple upload of the same files?

CutePHP (CuteNews) still have active forums from what I can see. Last update was today, and they have been very active in the problem solving forum for all of May.

The only way to be lazy here is to use something like WordPress.com, Blogger.com/Blogspot.com, or LiveJournal.com -- and deal with limitations as the tradeoff for no maintenance. There's really no way to create a HTML-only CMS. It'll rely on desktop software, so it's not really a CMS.
