Does it take over 7 hours to fix a DDOS

My reseller account has been more or less down for almost 7 hours! My host tell us because the server is undergoing a DDOS and they are trying to stop the attack, but so far they are not having much luck. Just wondering if this sort of thing is normal, none of my clients sites are working too well, they've been up and down all day. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, if they do work they are very slow and CSS files are not loading so sites are showing as just text and images.

There is one provider that I know of that turns your server off for 48 hours to fix a DDOS attack. It all depends on what they have to protect against a DDOS attack.

I think it depends more on the type of attack and how long the attack persists... DDOS can be a lame excuse which hosts just use because they can't be bothered to tell you the real reason, but otherwise it's something which most hosts are defenseless against... You can't really "fix: DDOS, you can only try to filter it out.

I've been provided with an update on the issue, apparently its a fairly heavy DDOS, they've blocked all attacking IP addresses but it's effecting network performance, which I suppose I can understand.

Hello, You may want to consider a DDoS protected host such as Staminus.net - They have very advanced DDoS mitigation so problems like this are virtually nil. Their setup is impressive - their control panel will automatically notify you of attacks and protect you from them.

I don't think going with a host that specifically says that they protect against DDOG attacks is what you should do (unless your site is the one being targeted) You should focus on other things such as value, features, quality etc.. I will say that even with a DDOS attack, that doesn't mean there has to be a lot of downtime if any. The Datacenter can Mitigate the attack so maybe the network is a little slow but with good quality services, usually 8 hours+ of downtime can be avoided. The downtime also depends on the seriousness of the attack and I don't know the seriousness of the attack your host is having.
