FTP service question

Posted by bonjurkes, 03-02-2012, 12:53 PM
I am not real fan of having a ftp service on my server, most likely security concerns. But scripts like wordpress, joomla etc. needs ftp for updating themselves. I was using "git" to send files to server. Anyways, I would like only localhost (only cmsses should be able to access) or only specified ip (my static ip) should be allowed to access ftp on server. Any ftp service can do that? Like pureftpd or vsftpd ?

Hi, Pure-ftpd could do that using .ftpaccess but i recommend you use iptables rules. It is very easy to prevent access to 21 port for any but your ip address.

I'm not sure of Joomla, but if your web server is set up correctly you do not need FTP to update Wordpress. It's a matter of having appropriate folder permissions and making sure your web server is running under the same user as the owner of your Wordpress root folder. Find more info on that here: Auto Update WordPress Without FTP
