Hi, anyone knows how to install CentOS 6.2 with software RAID? I can't find an option for create custom layout in text mode for CentOS 6.2

You have to use the graphical install or pre-create the partitions/array -- you can't do this in text mode.

can you tell me how to do this exactly? I know how to partition and install using graphical mode, and after i created the md0 and md1 array, RAID 1, how to install it with text mode?

Hello, While you install Centos, wait for partition resize point, then create two "Soft RAID" parition (or more if its > raid1) then you can click "RAID" and make one logical partition (with ext3) which will use this "soft parts". Regards,

Why are you trying to use text mode in the first place?

Posted by Cbchung, 02-28-2012, 07:28 PM
Yes, i need to install a centos 6.2 server for testing. Just want to benchmark the performance between SW RAID and HW RAID.

Hi RomanVelcom, I know how to make the partition in graphic mode, what I am doing is create two Software RAID 1 and mount it to /, and two S/R and mount it to /vz, and there is 6GB of SWAP, can i ask, how should i create the swap? 3gb on each HDD without RAID 1, or 6gb on each disk with RAID? What the problem here is, I can't do it in text mode, as [CTI] Todd said, i need to do it in graphic mode. But after i partition, how do i continue in text mode installation?

I understand that, but why are you using text mode to install? Just use the GUI install and be done with it.

But after that, the system installed is a GUI right? I don't want extra resource to render the GUI.

FYI, i am using usb loaded with 6.2 live cd, not dvd. I don't see a option to select as run in text mode in GUI installer.

No, the installer GUI has nothing to do with a GUI you would want to install for desktop use.

Use the netinstall ISO.

using netinstall, with livecd iso copy to root? in netinstall text mode, does it have create custom partition? Still can't get you, can you elaborate more? Thanks!

You configure during the install process which packages you want to install. Just don't install any GUIs.

Now i understand, see the attachment, my installer does not show this option. Attached Thumbnails

Cbchung, Try netinstall ISO, and use mirror for install or local CD as media. About swap: I think youn need put swap on raid also.... But why you need 6 GB SWAP ? How many RAM your box have ? I have box with 10 GB RAM and just 4 GB SWAP... rigth now 0 MB swap used, some time ~500 MB..... why you need 6 GB ? Regards,

last time i have one box with 8gb RAM, it use 1-3gb of swap, which the box is running vz, with vswap. If i have 24gb of RAM, how much swap should it have? 26gb? Reference: http://wiki.solusvm.com/index.php/Install#Partitioning In openvz it said RAM+2GB. I tried to use netinstall, but it gives error missing 9660 iso image. Which the image copy it to the root of the same USB as the netinstall. I can't use mirror and CD as no optical drive and no LAN available, and not sure how to configure wireless adapter.

Cbchung, I think 4 GB swap its MAX even you have 500 GB RAM Maybe on the fast SSD / SCSI controllers you can do more.... if this needed, but really 4 its ok I remember RedHat 6 installation guide, where they tell SWAP should be RAM * 2 ; so if u want install RedHat on 24G RAm you need 48 G swap ? When peoples use redhat 6 nobody have 2 gb ram (1 gb ram in server been as magic ) so, they tell you need more RAM? use it via DISK but now we have boad which allowed 96 GB ram so 100 GB swap ? No no no 4 its ok Last edited by RomanVelcom; 02-29-2012 at 12:37 AM.

You do not need to RAID swap, the kernel can can stripe it. (edit: though it can be useful to put swap on a RAID-1 device) Swap is not necessarily a "good" thing, using it excessively means you need to add more RAM, or reduce the load. Lots of swapping to disk can destroy performance. The standard minimal install should be fine. It can be cleaned up a little after the fact, but its pretty basic. If you can't get netinstall working, I'd just download a complete install image. Last edited by Microlinux; 02-29-2012 at 01:13 AM.

If i do not have to raid it, should i let it be 2gb on sda, and 2gb on sdb? 4Gb is enough on a 6.2, VSWAP enabled vps node, with 24gb RAM? Yes, i use the livecd full version and i can't get to choose, desktop, server, minimal, etc. I don't see that option on 6.2 installer livecd. Perhaps i should get dvd version?

Posted by Microlinux, 02-29-2012, 03:27 PM
Yes, you could do 2GB on sda and 2GB on sdb. However, its absolutely important that you understand swap is not a substitute for RAM. If you expect to use more than 24GB of RAM on any sort of consistent basis, you need to upgrade the RAM in your system. I honestly haven't used the full images in a very long time, but I'm pretty sure you're going to have the same install options as the netinstall image, so you should be able to choose minimal.

i discover a solution, netinstall with img works, live cd or dvd imaged load directly to USB wont have the choice to select the repo, etc.

Cool, I will just capped the Swap to 4GB. Thanks! But raid the swap is better or both disk with 2 gb?
