Resellers cant Assign Ip's in cPanel? WHAT?

Posted by LAMP Lighter, 08-22-2006, 04:51 PM
I've been using cPanel since it's first relase. I have used it at every level. I have a reseller account and tried to assign an ip and no go. So I open a ticket and my host tells me it's a bug. This is new to me. Can anyone shed some light on this? I've seen this, but anyone can post a bug. http://bugzilla.cpanel.net/show_bug.cgi?id=4324

It doesn't surprise me. cPanel has plenty of other bugs, such as how it doesn't even do anything if a reseller goes over their disk space or bandwidth limits...

From my past experience setting up resellers with Dedicated IP's they cannot modify an accounts IP after creation even if it is assigned to their account. What they can do is create a new account with an IP address (if they have some available in their pool). It really is a pain, but I don't think there is a way around this unfortunately.

Which I'm very grateful for. Individual domains will get suspended for going over their limits, but not entire reseller accounts. If an entire reseller account was suspended, because one site pushed beyond the limits of the reseller account, then that's not the best situation. I prefer to manually track reseller's total usage. Yes, there's that naughty word again, manual. Oh god forbid we do anything manually. Yes, clicking those few links can be oh so tiresome. If I see a reseller using more than they should (and it's usually disk space), I contact them and suggest an upgrade. It's better than forcing an upgrade on them, while their whole reseller account is suspended.

Resellers shouldn't assign dedicated IPs, imo. That should be handled by your supplier, as IPs should only be assigned under strict justification. But if your supplier has made IPs available from your reseller WHM, what is the error you receive when you attempt to assign that IP?

If I remember correctly Bob the options are not in the Reseller Control panel to assign IP's to a site, and it is not possible to enable these options. I remember looking into this in the past and beleive that is the case... correct me if I'm wrong.

You can configure a reseller's WHM so they can assign dedicated IPs when they're setting up new accounts. If IPs are available, then they would be in the IP drop down box, in the create an account form. If no IPs have been assigned to that reseller account, then no IPs will be available from the IP drop down menu on the create a new account page.

Right, that's what I had said in my original post... I thought he was asking about changing the IP of an existing site, not sure though. Either way I agree with what you say and that should / does work last time I tried.

AussieBOB is correct on all counts. I don't want to be misunderstood here. cPanel is THE BEST hosting tool ever created in my opinion. I was told by my host that there is now a bug (there was never one before) that keeps ASSIGNED RESELLER IP's from being used. It currently appears to defualt to (n) instead of givng you the IP you selected. So I opened a ticket at was told about this (new?) bug. Hmmm.... I seem to recall another toggle from root WHM that must also give permission to actually assign the ip's that are in the resellers pool. Can anyone confirm this or tell me if I'm just out my mind. So... Why is cPanel not aloowing me to ASSIGN ip's that appear in my pool? I said ASSIGN not change. I am saying that I see and can select IP's but the account setup seems to always defualt back to IP= (n)

Just have your reseller supplier assign dedicated IPs for you, if it won't work from your reseller WHM. If you can see IPs available, from your IP drop down list on the "Create a New Account" page, then you should be able to assign IPs to new account setups.

There's no bug to my knowledge that exists of this type. The resellers I host have no problems assigning dedicated IPs from a select pool and its also impossible to change the main "shared" IP for any given reseller. It does get a little confusing, I admit, but after some tinkering you'll find its very effective.

It's extremely odd that I cannot assign any of the IP's that are assigned to my account. In fact, it worries me. The host has gone ahead and done it for me, so that's taken care of, but I wonder of this is a precursor for more oddities.

In my experience, the host always assigned the IP's for my reseller accounts. I like it better that way anyway, it's a lot safer than me doing it.

In the certain situation that we are experiencing, even if a reseller has IPs assigned to their account (or even if they are allowed to access all available IPs on the server for that matter), they are unable to create a new account with a specified IP address. The dropdown box of IPs is present on the Create Account page, however when the account is created it ignores that selection, and assigns the account the shared IP address of the primary domain.
