Who to host with.

Posted by SwitchJohnny, 08-25-2006, 12:35 PM
I know this is the most popular question on this forum, but I've spent the last 4-5 days reading through this forum and other hosting review sites, and I still don't have a clear opinion on what host to go with. I need a reseller account with at least 5 gig and 50gig bandwidth. I'm flexable with the price, but don't really want to spend more than $30 a month. I want a good host. I've switched hosts so many times, it'd be nice to get one that actually provides the service they advertise. I've been looking at LYPHA, MICFO, JaguarPC, SurfSpeedy, Site5.com and a few others, but I've found good and bad reviews on all of them. I'm currently hosting with DPMSHosting, and while there server seems to be quick, and they do respond to tickets promply, I'm not happy with the Uptime. I must have sent in 20 tickets since I started hosting with them about a month ago. I got better things to do than play email tag. I enjoy using WHM/Cpanel, so a host using that is what I want. I don't want a VPS or Dedicated. I have enough responsibility. Any recommendations?

Oops didn't read the announcement on the top. That offers forum is just a bunch of crappy advertisements. But I'll post there.

This is probably the best room to ask what reseller is best, the offers forum is more other hosts offering to pay people to do work for them etc. I assume your looking for a linux reseller from you spec below, and $30 month budget for 5GB disk space sounds good enough to me. Hostgator seem to be popular and have had some good reviews on the forum so you could use the search facility at the top of the forum to do a search on them. Do you require anything else? Skins? Site builder? Fantastico? etc? Thanks

I've used hostgator before for about a day. I didn't like their WHM/CPANEL. You couldn't create new accounts per domain. You could host unlimited domains, but the domains were all under one cpanel account. I require a WHM/Cpanel where I can have seperate Cpanel logins per domain. I want the host to have up to date Perl, PHP, MySQL because I use plenty of scripts and am always testing new ones. I'd like 24/7 real support and an actual phone number to call and speak to a human. I don't want some kid in his basement or some lonely single fat dude living in his moms house. I want a legitimate company who's been around for awhile, who's servers stay up, and who's support staff can fix a simple problem in 1 ticket instead of playing ticket tag 50 times for simple problems. Any yes, linux hosting. That should clairify. Does this exist? Last edited by SwitchJohnny; 08-25-2006 at 02:29 PM.

Hi if it was a reseller account you would of been able to create different accounts as you should have WHM access not just CPanel.

Yes... you are correct... I must of been looking at low budget sites at that time. Well, if nobody has any other recommendations, Hostgator it is... again. Thanks

HostGator gets pretty good reviews around here, another CPanel host you might look at is Dotable (http://dotable.com)

Whichever host you decide to go with, be sure to ask a lot of questions. Although reviews here are very helpful and so are the recommendations, people have different experiences with different hosts. What may be a great host for some, may be bad for others. It's important that you contact the company yourself, and maybe try getting in touch with different departments to get a feel of the company and use that in conjunction with the reviews and recommendations you receive here... Good luck!

I can tell you that you don't want Surfspeedy. I ordered a server from them and it never worked and they wouldn't refund my money for it. I only had it for 20 days and never had it working more than 2 days straight.

Good luck with hostgator. You mentioned you wanted up to date perl, php, and mysql. A good number of hosts will not support php5, so if that's one of the things you're considering this may be a good pre-sales question to ask.

I recommend to contact the hosts with some moderately technical questions and then judge the responses on timeliness and content of their answers. I actually find that the content slightly outweighs timeliness

I recommend the following host: http://duportonline.com/ I was hosted with them previously and they were very helpful. Their plans have changed a bit since I was with them but this seems to fit your needs: http://duportonline.com/dp1.php Don't let the word dedicated put you off. It's a reseller account with higher limits than their normal reseller accounts, that's why it's a bit pricey.

Dont use Surfspeedy they will fool you. I have an account of 100Gb and the disk has 5Gb free. I chat with support and they told me "doent matter that enought disk space"
