Host Maven Review

Posted by Alex, 07-09-2006, 11:17 PM
These past two months have been my very late spring cleaning months. I have been moving things around, swapping sites, changing up software, etc. While most of my stuff runs cp-less, I decided it would be nice to have a small reseller account or VPS somewhere with a control panel on it for clients that requested it. I also noticed a little sticky in the ad forums about a company called HostMaven, and signed up for one of their reseller accounts. It’s been about one month so far. Let’s start off with the network and hardware. Host Maven currently operates out of Layered Tech in their Savvis datacenter. The server runs AMD processors with a good amount of RAM and hard disk space. So far the hardware and network uptime has been superb, and the server is always nice and speedy. Everything on the server is up to date, and PHP 4 and PHP 5 are both installed, which is nice. This leads us into software. Host Maven includes everything you would normally expect (Perl, CGI, cURL, Zend, and ioncube), and throws in a few extras. Some nice software extras they have are PHP 4 and PHP 5, Ruby on Rails, Python, GD, and Imagekick (normally all the hosts I’ve used have only GD or only Imagekick). Everything on the server is up to date, and it’s all beautifully maintained. Next comes the client side. This encompasses things like their billing and support systems and ease of use of their website. Host Maven uses ModernBill and Kayako, which are both in my opinion excellent products. ModernBill is easy to use, and easy to pay invoices with as well as see when your next invoice is. ModernBill is probably my favorite billing panel (it’s what I use myself), and it’s nice to be able to use it client side. Kayako is easy to use as well, and is nicely integrated into ModernBill. All in all, its easy to get support or pay bills (which I’m sure they appreciate). I also like how everything is integrated into their site (order forms, billing login, etc). This leads into support. Support from Host Maven has been the best support I have ever received as a shared or reseller customer. Responses are given in about five minutes from knowledgeable technicians (it’s nice to not feel like you’re talking to a vegetable). Any query is responded too quickly and correctly, and all issues I’ve had (which have only been two) have been taken care of extremely rapidly. Overall, I am very pleased with Host Maven. I would rate them at a 9 (maybe even 9.5) out of 10, deducting one (or one-half) point becuase they are still so new, and I have yet to be with them for a very long time. However, if things keep going this well, I may upgrade to one of their VPSes soon, and I see no reason why they can't go up to being a 10 out of 10. Although I was skeptical at first because of how new a company they are, they have obviously done some homework, and I hope to continue doing business with them and using their services in the future. Alex

Alex, wonderful review! Refreshing to hear something good about a host rather than all the bad we usually get to read. What domain name do you have hosted with them?

Hello, Currently I only have clients at HostMaven, and cannot disclose their domains, however I will setup some subdomain off my domain tomorrow or this weekend and reply to this thread with that. Thank you for your patience,
