Is it good for large file uploads my site host files mostly ranging from 50mb - 200mb ive had problems in the past with uploaders just stopping half way through and stuff, it really annoys users

Then your server isn't configured correctly. It might just be the upload script that's timing out Increase memory allocations & execution times

yes i think the developer tried this but no luck i just guess i need to get someone more skilled to tweak the server to make sure it can handle the long uploads when i launch the new site

You need to figure out where its getting stuck at a server level & script level.

Please try after disabling firewall in your machine. Sometimes firewall terminates connections which are open for a certain period of time. Transferring the files using SCP too would be a good solution.

Why not use FTP ? You can install pureftpd to use mysql table to authenticate. This will allow resume too. With a upload handler script, you can handle the uploaded files.
