Tarball Help - Folder Problem

Posted by aodat2, 09-30-2011, 10:10 PM
Hi guys, I have a quick question. Lets say for example I have a tarball named testing.tar.gz and inside the tarball is a bunch of files which is zipped from specific folders. So eventually when unzipping the tarball, it will basically put everything back to the folder which it was zipped from. For example: \a_folder\another_folder\filename.doc \a_folder\another_folder\filename.xls and etc... Naturally when untar, the files will go within that \a_folder\another_folder\ and etc. Is there a way for me to actually untar everything into a single folder? Like for example, I do not want \a_folder\another_folder\ to be there. I would just like to skip it sending the files there. If there's no way to do so, then how could I after untar-ing the file, put it all into a single folder without \a_folder\another_folder\ and all easily. I do not intend to go though each and every directory as there are thousands of files but with the same folder extension. Hope I am clear on what I am talking about. Hope you guys understand it too. Thanks.

Why don't use find with xargs to copy files to one folder? I mean after unpacking.
