PHP 5 + cPanel + MySQL + SSH

Posted by drakazz, 04-15-2006, 05:05 AM
Hi, I was looking through forums for a while now. Seems that none of hosts I've looked through have PHP 5. It's all PHP 4 which is much slower than PHP 5. Does anyone know PHP 5 Hosts probiding cPanel and having even a dedicated MySQL (At least 4.1) host, like 1&1 does or at least MySQL that doesn't lag (About 5 SQL Queries per page visit OR less). Disk space would be around 800MB and Bandwidth at around 25GB/Month. I will want to host multiple websites (domains), control .htaccess files and have SSH access to control files etc. (I don't like FTP). I need a reliable host, tha would have a very good uptime and not bulked with other websites in one server, for performance. I will need to use quiet a lot of MySQL for the access so MySQL space would be ok either as option from my diskspace or just quiet big (>50MB, at least) I might want later to upgrade to a more powerful VPS, for around $30/month with Gentoo GNU/Linux or any other good Gnu/Linux distro. I don't want no playing as all I want is to stable host websites. Max. Price: $15/Month Thank You

I am not particular how many hosts offering cpanel will have the type of clustered environment you are looking for with dedicated mysql servers - you may want to look at hsphere or plesk hosts for this configuration Although in ideal situations php5 would probably be faster the php4 - an overloaded server running php5 will still be slower then a php4 server which is undersold. php5 is not yet stable enough for most providers and most control panels havent announced "formal" support yet, so, Im not particular how wise it would be to host in such an environment yet (though I have heard of some hosts who have taken the plunge and seem to be doing ok)

Cartika : I'm not even sure any control panel's will bother with PHP5, considering PHP6 is already right around the corner. I have a server running it (non production, it's for my own things), and PHP6 is pretty stable already. If I were in the control panel business, I wouldn't bother with PHP5.

Good point - - personally, we havent tested either, but, from what I have heard, php5 is a nightmare...

a question to Cartika: how is PHP 5 unstable? PHP 5 is much better than PHP 4 and runs much faster too. What do you mean by "unstable"? My current version (5.1.2) didn't seem to havy any bugs yet and is much more advanced than PHP 4. If you think that PHP 4 is stable enough, please stay like that. But what you are missing out is great OOP enhancements in PHP 5, which I started to use more just today and really seems that my project is going to be powerful. I mean that PHP 5 is a real thing for working with. I had tried out PHP6, it's just amazing! I didn't try out any new features but runs smooth. Oh, I just received another E-Mail from WHT. A reply to CartikaHosting's post: What you *heard* is just secondary hand data. And you're applying it as a fact though it's secondary data which you haven't proven or tested yourself, meaning that it is very unreliable! Get PHP 5 on your PC, and run some benchmarking on GD for example -> PHP 5 does it about 170% faster (image resizing), and seems really awsome

Hi, Site5 reseller plans might be a litle over your budget but can cover most of your needs (including PHP5). Good Luck!

For me - it looks like they're overselling: $16.47/month for 27 GB webspace and 750 GB bandwidth

I'd say there is not way that can't be serious over-selling... While this may be fine for many users the OP's requirement of "and not bulked with other websites in one server" would rule this out in this case. The OP should be able to find something that matches the OPs spec, with the probable exception of the seperate database server, inside the stated budget without major overselling.

Sorry but you are looking at the wrong plans. That huge overselling is only true for shared plans. Site5 reseller plans starts at $19.95/mo for 4Gb WebSpace and 60 Gb Bandwidth.

Maybe try looking in the hosting offers threads, alternatively there are many staff members from hosting companies who post on WHT and will have a link to their site and say something like "we offer php5" check some of those links out as well. Always research any prospective host and most of all... good luck!

I think php 5 is much instable, php 4 is old but much stable and fast.

Prove it, please. Read through here: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/show...64&postcount=9 And here: http://www.sebastian-bergmann.de/blo...rformance.html IF software does something slow, there is a problem -> it's unstable, just like PHP 4 v PHP 5 By the way, it's offtopic and I need some more PHP5 hosts
