Root SSH Access Denied but stil works

Posted by joshuayip, 09-12-2011, 10:39 AM
Hello I am new to VPS and Linux administration and WHM (with many more menu options). I have gotten my root access. Using putty, I tried logging in. I dont notice having this issue before I restored my reseller Cpanel account. Now when I login using putty, I am seeing Access Denied before the pwd prompt. After I enter the password, it lets me in and everything seems working. Is there anything wrong here?

I've noticed this issue with every server I've used after I upgraded to the latest version of PuTTY recently. See the last post here: http://centos.org/modules/newbb/view...19107&forum=41

are you switching your user to root after logging in as another user ? or directly logging in as root ?

Its probably trying a different mode of authentication first, such as with keys. Its nothing to worry about.

I tried using Tunnelier from Bitvise. This message does not appear any more. So I conclude its a putty thing (I hope) ...

Putty may be sending it some form of authentication and its failing and dropping back to keyboard-interactive.

Change the permit root login option inside of /etc/ssh/sshd_config. This is generally disabled by default.

It is related to Putty and ssh2: The solution is to change Putty settings under "SSH" - "Auth", there you uncheck "Attempt GSSAPI authentication (SSH-2 only)". Then click back to "Sessions" and save the change for "Default settings".
