Controlling payment fraud

Hey Webmasters, I hope this is the correct place to discuss this topic. As we all know that getting new customers gives us a warm fuzzy feeling but this feeling quickly disappears when you realise that actually it's a fraudulent transaction and you have to reverse the payment and delete the account :-( At the moment I just make sure that the email address used to sign up for the service is the same as the one used for the Paypal transaction but has anyone got any other tips as to what to look for to avoid these fraudsters? Also I notice allot of the fraudulent signups are coming from France anyone else experience this?

fraud transactions comes in from all parts of the world. The best way to prevent it is to stop automatic processing of the payment, without approval. You or someone authorized may manually check the validity of the account by his IP, address phone numbers etc and process them manually.

If you accept payments via Paypal, check that byers account is verified. And look into Maxmind rating of the order. It usually has some sense. If we notice contradicting details on the customers signup details (like IP is in one country but the user claims to live in a different one) we do call through his contact phone number. If this fails then account is suspended immediately.

In order to prevent fraud, I would highly recommend calling each order to verify it.
