need some info on surfspeedy

Posted by lorisa, 04-10-2006, 01:09 PM
Hello I'm currently hosting with hostgator, and so far everything was pretty cool, except today they had some trouble and we got 20min downtime. Looking at the past month of their service I'm not really concerned, but on the other hand I was thinking getting myself a 2nd reseller account with another company in case of any emergencies So I was looking at surfspeedy and would like to get some feedback or some recomendations about any other good host. Thanks in advance Lorisa

Have you tried to do a search on this company? I am sure you can find some useful info http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php Sorry to hear about your experience with HostGator today, although I am sure you will receive some sort of SLA credit.

yes i did but couldn't find any recent stuff regarding hostgator. like i said I'm not worry about them. They have been great so far and I will stick with them. The fact that they had some trouble today just told me that i should get a 2nd server using like a backup in case this happends again I have customers who call me 2 min after their site goes down. So I want to keep this as down as possible

Completely understandable regarding the customer's response when downtime occurs. Perhaps you can find something on Surfspeedy at WHReviews.com

Posted by lorisa, 04-10-2006, 01:59 PM
I already tried that too, but there was nothing on them at WHReviews.com Like I already said I'm not leaving hostgator, but would like to get a 2nd "Hostingleg" so whatever recommendation about a GOOD host will be welcome I'm using the silver reseller plan at hostgator and would like to have something similair 10GB HDD, 100GB bandwith, WHM, cpanel, unlimited domains etc for $49.95/month and free setup Oh Important isthat they accept paypal Thats basically what I'm looking for

You do have a decent budget, that's for sure. I'm curious though, a 20 minute downtime over a whole year (or more) is not that much. It's still a shared server and servers require reboots every now and then. And even if you switch the nameservers during a downtime, just with the propagation time, it would be useless (it would take an hour or more, and most hosts won't be down for that long).

Posted by lorisa, 04-10-2006, 02:42 PM
Thats true about the downtime and just to repeat myself I'm not considering leaving hostgator, nor do I complain here. They have been 100% uptime during the last months and yes you are right about the shared server issue and the propagation time But as I said before I have some sites who need to be online and my customers pay me for that, so I figured having a backup server would at least guarantee that they will not end updown for days (even if I not believe that hostgator ever would have such a downtime at all) Having a BU would more be to show to my customers that I have done all possible to keep them online. That's the reason for getting a 2nd Host I also think using private nameserver on both hosts like ns1.whateverdomain-hosted-at-hostgator.com and ns2.whateverdomains-hosted-on-another-host.com that should keep the propagation time on a minimum. (Or am I wrong here???) Sorry for not beeing clear enough about that at the first place but as you can see english is not my native language Last edited by lorisa; 04-10-2006 at 02:47 PM.

One small thing that I would add is that "overselling enabled" can have a serious impact on the reseller hosting provider's prices, for somes very obvious reasons. In any case, it is something to take into account when comparing one host to another.

When HG goes down does the NETWORK or the SHARED SEVER? If in many cases its the network then your request seems that you are looking for 100% network uptime? If so why not just move to a provider that offers 100% network uptime, in the long run it will most likely save you money. On the other hand, if your SERVER fails, just purchase another reseller account with HG and request to placed on another box.

I think today they had some trouble with the server. Like I already said I do appreciate HG, the support and uptime (except this flaw today) is excellent and yes it sounds like a good idea to get another box with them. But the problem could be that if the network fails I would have my main and my BU down, so I'm wondering what the best solution would be to come up with.

Hostgator is reputable and growing quite a bit. I can't comment on Surfspeedy. Your budget should allow you to shop around. -Jay

Hi Jay thanks for your reply and yes I'm pretty happy with HG. Shopping around is quite difficult, considering that I have responsability against my customers. Don't want to use them as ginnypigs, if you understand what I mean Therefore this post at this board. Because I really want a BU for my customers, even if this flaw today with HG never will appaer again. My Customers are my bread and I will do everything to keep them with us. So please get me some suggestions where I should look or what I could do. Thanks again

I totally understand. Surfspeedy I don't know much about so I would test out a few places on response times via email for sales and email support. This is something I feel shows how on top of things they are. -Jay

The solution I have mentioned may be your best bet at this point. On the other hand their ARE providers that offer 100% uptime. Ofcourse if you run a mission critial website, and you feel that 100% uptime is the ONLY option then I suggest you switch providers, if you are this concerned with 20 mins of downtime in a year. Remember you ARE on a shared environment, with that being said things are going to happen, even with dedicated servers you are still not out of the clear. I suggest either getting another server with HG, or just moving all together to a host that guarantees the uptime you request!

Hi Hostfrog we just had another downtime with HG I have contacted them and asked if they could move me to another server, but so far no answer yet. Anyway I'm feeling bad about the whole situation and think that I really have to move. So could you point me in the right directions of some reliable hosts who offer 100% uptime? Thanks and Happy Easter!!!

Hmmm well you can look around the offers section of WHT, you may find some better luck there. Sorry you are having such problems with HostGator. I do hope you find a solution that better fits you soon.

Uptime that is truly close to 100% can only come in load balanced environments with high levels of redundancy, that can only come at particular price levels. IMO, out of shared hosting and reseller hosting as they generally come these days, one can only expect 99.9%+ yearly uptime.

Thanks for the explanation Since we had another downtime today and my sites are uptime critical we decided to go away from a shared reseller account and get our own dedicated server and since we have been very happy with HG we decided to stick with them. Appaerently the latest downtimes was a result of some bad script on that box from another account, so this will not happen again after we have our own box Anyway thanks to all of you for the advice and responses on this treath Happy Easter to all of you

Good luck please let us know how things turn out with HG, I am sure you will be fine

Just a few hours ago I ordered a dedicated box with HG and I already received username/password That's the way I like and I think i will not regrett my decission to stay with HG. As already mentioned my fault was to put this kind of sites on a shared server, but at least I learned from it and I can only give this message to anybody who has critical sites hosted: Don't save on the hosting, cause your clients are important and deserver the best you can give them I think with this post I can close this thread, since I have found the perfect solution to keep my customers online A BIG thanks to all who have helped me here to get this decission Happy Holidays to all Lorisa PS:

As stated before, that is great you have found the provider. Pretty good how HostGator got the server set up that fast. I agree with you, I think you make a wise choice to stay. Good luck and keep us updated.

I just got informed that HG switched all my stuff from my reseller account to my dedicated box I'm doing hosting and webdesign since 1995 and I think I have seen a lot but this is by far the most impressive company i worked with. Thanks Hostgator

lorisa, if your customer cannot accept a 20 min downtime you should move him to another host. Any dedicated server will have such outages, to avoid this and keep downtime to minimum you seek for a provider with a clustered environment like Dynamicnet, Jodohost, Cartika, Eurovps... You should also explain to your customers how shared servers work. If they want true 100% uptime they cannot have this with only 5-10$/month !

Good luck with your dedicated server, and may the uptime be satisfatory to your customers! As per your request, I'll be closing the thread.
