Securing a custom CMS

Hey We have an inhouse CMS we use, what are the top tips to secure it apart from a strong username and password? Thanks guys, look forward to the insights.

1) if any folders or files called settings and admin normally rename it to something else and update the code. 2) use the htaccess file secure any mysql injections and hacking attempts, plenty of examples on Internet (simply google for it)
