Can't have joomla on RZ B-2

Posted by masif2000, 01-23-2006, 01:12 PM
This is not a RZ bashing thread so don't think of it as such. I like Reseller Zoom and thats why I have been with them for almost a year. Recently I installed Joomla on one of my sites. With no add-on componens installed, I was getting 500 errors with joomla out of the box, sporadically. I didn't think it was an issue with the host, prior to checking recent discussions at WHT. So I wasted a lot of time trying to figure it out mytself. With no avail, I finally asked them. I was told that my index.php file is taking more than 10mb per process and its automatically killed and that I need to optimze it. I am not a php developer. The limit stays at 10mb even if I upgrade to the next budget plan - B-3. The adavnce plan increases the limit by 5mb per process to a total of 15mb. I don't know if this is going to cut it with Joomla. The premimun plan gives me another 5mb per process. I have no clues as to where the bottle neck would be with joomla. I understan what RZ is trying to do with the limit but I think it would make more sense to kill the process if it goes beyond the max limit for a specif amount of time, say 5 seconds. If the process takes 15mb (instead of 10mb) for a fraction of a second, it should NOT be killed. Anyway, I guess I have two options. One is to start looking for another CMS system and the other is to look for another host. I don't really wanna give up on either of the two because I like them both. Opinions? Thoughts?

Joomla straight out of the box shouldn't cause any issues. There is mambo which is very similar to joomla, but will most likely have the same out come for you.

Based on the experience you detailed, I can only agree with your opinions and thoughts. Joomla is such an often used CMS that it's not exactly wise of any host to setup things so that it's virtually impossible to have it work properly, especially in an "out of the box" installation. One may be able to accept that situation for a "budget plan", but advanced plans should really be setup so that they cope with Joomla. It's just a personal opinion though... Ask them what the exact figure is, so that you can asses whether upgrading would make a real diffference.

Well, they gave me the logs. They said that the highest it took was 13 mb. They recommended the upgrade too but I am not sure how great the difference is b/w 13mb and 15 mb which is the limit on their advanced plans.

Have you tried running it again? The values you noted are old and were updated.

You mean the limit has been increased? Whats the new limit? The numbers can't be taht old. The email exchanges between you and me regarding this issue are only couple days old, Friday (1/20/05) to be precise. Last edited by masif2000; 01-23-2006 at 03:22 PM.

I suggest visiting our forums to discuss this topic and you'll be able to stay updated. I don't want to post the URL but you can find a link on our support page.

Hosting Zoom have become a cheap and nasty company now they've put limits on their accounts... WHO PUTS LIMITS ON RESELLER ACCOUNTS THESE DAYS!? I think the fact that you have to now have a package on their advanced range (which still has limits!!) you can get their support... this is poor. I've had alot of problems since they introduced accounts limits, and I know alot of friends who have!

I've had a somewhat similar experience with another webhost except that they were pointing out static pages as being memory hogs. Does that point to a potential server misconfiguration?

Well, just so you know, I am still getting the 500 errors. I am not getting it on the homepage anymore though. I will either submit a new ticket or send a follow up email on my previous ticket. Thanks.

Hm... should i turn back grom RZ now?! i was about to buy a reseller account with them... Now what should i do?!!?!? I dont want limits. I'm using CMS like joomla and mambo, i don't want to drop them just for some limitations.

If you're truly satisified with RZ I would recommend just upgrading to the next plan and try to secure some sort of possible refund offer from them if it manages to go over 15MB usage.

Umm, companies trying to maintain the integrity of their servers (or maybe I'm just completely out in left field...?) While it does seem odd that an OOTB Joomla installation won't work, hopefully the OP will find the answer they seek at RZ's forums.

I think I owe it to RZ and everyone concerened here on wht. ResellerZoom has removed the memory limits on the resller accounts. My joomla site is functional again.

All's well that ends well, I guess. Glad you got it resolved

They didnt remove limits, they made 16mb instead of what it used to be.

Posted by masif2000, 01-28-2006, 05:44 AM
Nope, they removed 'em. If you are an RZ customer, check the announcement on their forum.

Sorry then, I got on Live Chat with them and Andrew (i think it was him) told me that the process limit is 16mb now, also on advanced. Let's hope is removed as you say. Then ill certainly go with them! I'll actually buy 2 accounts BR ones, i need one for a friend.

Don't know when you were on the chat with them but the announcement was made on 1/23 (or 1/24?)

Kiet made a post in the forum saying the memory limits were removed. The memory limits were the main cause of many scripts not working. The techs might have just been slowed to be informed about the change.

this attitude distroyed the business.... remember you are only paying for a part of something when you buy a reseller account. Why do people expect to have it all for 5$? if you can have it all for 5$ why pay 200$ for a server? and related to the subject... RZ first raised the limit on memory and then removed it completely. thank you RZ signed, A very happy customer.
