hosting speeds... questions...

Posted by geestring, 11-27-2005, 04:23 PM
Can webhosting companies offer speeds that match the users high speed line? Should I be expecting that my clients can download a file from their site and get it at 300k/s? if their high speed line is 3mbit?

That depends on a great many things... Where is the client with respect to the server? Are you on a busy shared host, or your own dedicated server(s)? How many people are accessing the site at the same time? How mch activity is there on other accounts on the server and "near by" (same data-center) servers? In short: With a shared host: don't expect it, but it might happen With a dedicated server: It's certainly possible, but don't expect it once the site(s) get busy unless you have a dedicated 100mbs port! (3 or 4 downloads at ~300Kb/s would max out a 10Mbps port)

Since most hosts are sitting on 100mbit ports I dont see why your clients shouldn't be able to max their 3mbit lines, no doubt!

I agree with dhAndrew, as long as your host has a 100mbps link, you should easily hit 3mbps. Now if you have 30 people each downloading a 100MB file that have 3mbps connections, then no, they are not going to each get their maximum. But if you have that much traffic then you will need some major bandwidth. I am on a shared hosting account with SurpassHosting.com and have 100GB monthly bandwidth and I can always max out my RoadRunner download speed (5mbps). Here is a test file from my site if you want to test it out for yourself: warcraft.gotdns.com/test100MB.zip I don't have five posts so I can't link yet. -Mark

actually if you client base on a asia country access to a US hosted server the speed for the FTP will sure slow than user access from US.
