HostGator support going downhill?

Posted by Think-eDesign, 10-03-2005, 07:20 AM
I am a HostGator reseller who uses only 700meg out of 5gig & very little bandwidth as none of my 7 sites use a database or has downloads. I found out this morning that all my web sites were playing up. I contacted HostGator but they blame ny Australian ISP. I have sent numerous emails & they still haven't fixed the problem. The problem is that the IP# addresses work fine - but the www.domainname does not. I've been doing some digging (pardon the pun) and found that there are some funky NS records for a few of my domains. Domain Authoritive NS records thesower.net - 70.84.234.226 and .227 ejilly.net - 70.84.234.226 and .227 nikkita.net - 70.84.234.226 and .227 think-edesign.com - 70.84.234.226 and .227 The two NS records 70.84.234.226 and 70.84.234.227 appear to be up and answering. inaroma.com.au - ns1.think-edesign.com and ns2.think-edesign.com splashesofjoy.com.au - ns1.think-edesign.com and ns2.think-edesign.com However ns1 and ns2.think-edesign.com do not resolve when querying the domain's authoritive name server. Instead it answer points to "ns53.websitewelcome.com". This is called a "lame" nameserver, and can cause all sorts of issues. When I lookup the NS records for think-edesign.com on the Brisbane caching DNS I get: [dean@bri-nfc2 dean]$ dig @203.21.20.20 think-edesign.com ns ; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> @203.21.20.20 think-edesign.com ns ; (1 server found) ;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch ;; got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 4 ;; flags: qr rd; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 2, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUERY SECTION: ;; think-edesign.com, type = NS, class = IN ;; AUTHORITY SECTION: think-edesign.com. 1d21h23m45s IN NS ns2.think-edesign.com. think-edesign.com. 1d21h23m45s IN NS ns1.think-edesign.com. ;; Total query time: 1 msec ;; FROM: bri-nfc2 to SERVER: 203.21.20.20 203.21.20.20 ;; WHEN: Mon Oct 3 18:31:31 2005 ;; MSG SIZE sent: 35 rcvd: 71 So I ask ns1.think-edesign.com to resolve itself for me: [dean@bri-nfc2 dean]$ dig @ns1.think-edesign.com ns1.think-edesign.com ; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> @ns1.think-edesign.com ns1.think-edesign.com ; Bad server: ns1.think-edesign.com -- using default server and timer opts ; (2 servers found) ;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch ;; got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NXDOMAIN, id: 4 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 1, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUERY SECTION: ;; ns1.think-edesign.com, type = A, class = IN ;; AUTHORITY SECTION: think-edesign.com. 23m34s IN SOA ns53.websitewelcome.com. root.acura.websitewelcome.com. ( 2004112802 ; serial 4H ; refresh 2H ; retry 5w6d16h ; expiry 1D ) ; minimum ;; Total query time: 0 msec ;; FROM: bri-nfc2 to SERVER: default -- 127.0.0.1 ;; WHEN: Mon Oct 3 18:31:42 2005 ;; MSG SIZE sent: 39 rcvd: 106 The NXDOMAIN response is the server telling me that record does not exist - in effect the authoritative name server doesn't know where to find itself! If you add the correct DNS records for ns1 and ns2 to the think-edesign.com zone then you should find the sites will start working. This looks to be an issue with the nameservers for think-edesign.com, whoever administers these should be able to resolve the issue. Running an IPWHOIS on the domain and the domains nameservers seems to show them assigned to ThePlanet.com Internet Services, if this is who HostGator use then the nameservers are hosted with them. So all along this has been an issue with HostGator's nameservers housed at "The Planet" - yet all along HostGator have fobbed me off with blaming my ISP here in Australia. Shame, HostGator, shame. Now please fix the problem - I pay to have sites hosted & available to people not to get lame excuses when it is your fault like blaming my ISP.

http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/dnsre...n=thesower.net Yup, you're right, it's really messed up. This is not the only HostGator domain that I've seen something like that on... If you can access the WHM by IP you can try creating an A record for each ns that you have. This may correct the problem, though they should have already tried this... Cheers.

ozedesign, So you have a WHM account with the main WHM domain of think-edesign.com, with personalised nameservers of ns1.think-edesign.com and ns2.think-edesign.com? Those nameservers are registered - ns1.think-edesign.com ns2.think-edesign.com Yes, HostGator gets their servers from ThePlanet.com. Those 4 domains come up fine for me. Check your dns zone for your main WHM domain, and make sure that you have your ns1 and ns2 IPs added in there. ns1 14400 IN A ns1_IP_here ns2 14400 IN A ns2_IP_here
