what do I need to know before becoming a resller?

Posted by dreamer21, 10-01-2005, 01:07 AM
Like many folks here, I run a startup webdesign company. I'm considering becoming a reseller. I want to know does being a reseller of any webhosting company mean do I am also the first point of contact for my clients and their tech support needs. Or do they still go to the webhosting company when tech support issues come up? What are the basic pros and cons to becoming a reseller? I'm sure there must be a long thread that has addressed this issue? Thank you.

Some reseller hosting providers will support the end users (aka your customers). Most will only support you, being your job to support the end users. Probably a lot of them. You have two very effective "weapons" that you can use: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s= and patience. Good luck!

I have a suggestion: You should offer web hosting in addition to web design to any customers you get, if these are local customers then you can push high rates and make a very decent profit. In this case, you don't even need to outsource support as everything will be simplified. Cheers,

1) Money doesn't grow on trees. 2) You're only as good as your provider. 3) Always strive to meet and exceed your customers expectations.

Hi! dreamer21, Welcome to WHT Traditionally, you provide all support to your customer and f required you can contact your host. If you are looking to host just our clients, then its good to have a reselle account bcoz most of the times you will need support as you are developing and managing the site.. plus you can make decent profits.. your clients will normally just ask about emails etc.. (this is my personal experience) And the profits are really good and recurring.. All the best

1. Pros - As a reseller you can hope for growing into a big business without much of an investment. 2. Cons - Since your investment is too little, you may give up without trying hard enough to make it a success. Web Hosting is all about total dedication. More people you have in your team sharing your vision, better host you will become.

You need to know a little bit about web design and web programming to start being a web host, even as a reseller. A little server understanding over that, what does apache, mysql, php, asp, mssql etc do, and how do they do. And you will be the first point of contact for your customers, yes.

Guys, all great responses. I think that unity100 summed my fears best when s/he said that I need to know a bit about apache, mysqul, serveretc... Quite frankly, I don't have a strong knowledge about this stuff. I do agree that being a reseller can result in a decent residual income year after year, but the time to learn this stuff can be a bit daunting and not to mention, it can result in me offering poor customer service to my clients if I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing. I guess I may have to my dreams of making bling bling from being a reseller on the side for the moment eh? By the way, I'm with A Small Orange.

Can you name a few of the top of your head that you would recommend so that I can do my homework?

Unfortunately members can not recommend hosts without prior first hand experience with them, and I did not use reseller hosting so far. I can recommend you to read the first page of threads in this subforum and note each host that is mentioned with laudatory words. That should give you a list with some of the more trusted hosts of the hour. Two or so of them should be providing end user support. After that, search for even more feedback on all of them: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s= Good luck!

I think you have to support your customers, your webhost is transparent to the end user. Pros: minimal start up cost, managed server, you can be up and running in literally a day or two, etc. Cons: minimal server control, etc.
